Revell 1/32 Arado Ar 196 A-3

1 just bought the Revell 1/32 Arado Ar 196 A-3 it’s a beautiful kit I’m really looking forward to getting started on this one. I’m thinking about doing a water dio with it I’ll post some progress pictures as I go along.

Looking forward to seeing the pictures!

Awesome! I’ve got this kit in the stash and it’s a beauty. Kermit’s building one (or was…haven’t seen updates in awhile) for the Weathering GB…may want to check it out!

I won a gift certificate at our club meeting to a hobby shop that’s an hour away from me. That’s what I picked out. Sure does look nice. Looking forward to seeing yours.

Hi chaps

It is great to see more people get this stunning kit. I am sure I posted pics of mine around January this year on this site. If not then HERE:

For those building this you do need to pay attention and do some painting first. This model went together for me without any filler and the cockpit looks good just OOB with painting.

This particular version is on the boundary of the colour change in the cockpit, but as it was really a Kreigsmarine aircraft the interior remained RLM02 with RLM66 control panels etc.

For those wanting the Correct shades, The following Vallejo Model Color colours are shade matched 100% to period RLM shade cards which I have managed to study for a few months

Cockpit/engine panel interior

General colour RLM02 - Vallejo Model Colour 886

Control Panels/radios etc RLM66 Vallejo Model Colour 866

Exterior Colours

Lower Colour European West & East, Baltic & Northern Theatres

Prior to November 1941 this was RLM 65v.1 Matched to VMC 906

Post November 1941 this was changed to RLM65v.2. Matched to VMC 907

Mediterranian Theatre Lower Colour

RLM78 - VMC 961

It is possible that the underside colour was changed to match the general theatre colour of aircraft while the top remained RLM72/73 but I have not found any supporting evidence.

UPPER SURFACE HARD LINE SPLINTER PATTERN

For Seaplanes and maritime recon aircraft this remained the same throughout the war in all theatres and is RLM72/73

RLM72 matched to VMC980

RLM73 matched to VMC895

Vallejo Model Colour Numbers and Names as referenced above

RLM02 - VMC 70886 Green Grey

RML65v.1 - VMC 70906 Pale Blue

RLM65v.2 - VMC 70907 Pale Grey Blue

RLM66 - VMC 70886 Grey Green

RLM72 - VMC 70980 Black Green

RLM73 - VMC 70895 Gunship Green

RLM78 - VMC 70961 Sky Blue

These as I have said further up are 100% shade matched to original shade cards and should give you a fantastic authentic paint job.

WATCH OUT FOR

The engine panels and the engine. Take care when putting this together. The engine looks good in Vallejo natural Steel (70864) and oily steel (70865).

Decals. On the floats in the instructions you get a choice of a red line or text USE BOTH. It is correct to do so. No tail insignia is included ( the silly EU rule)

Don’t forget to put some weight in the floats!

I think that is all… Happy building chaps!

James

James,

Good reference on the paints…thanks!

Yes Thank You James you must be a mind reader. I was thinking about asking for advice about the proper paint colors to use and your Arado looks fantastic I really like that splinter camoflage.

Thank You again

Roger

I’m not a plane guy,but I gots ta get this one!

I’m ready to start the Arado 196. I’m still debating about what I’m going to do with it. I have always wanted to build a dio of a seaplane moving slowly (taxiing) through the water with a small wake behind the floats. I would have to put a small electric motor in the plane to spin the prop and wire it through the floats into the base. I could also do a diorama of the plane tied up to a worf with a couple of figures standing on it like this picture. What do you all think?

Put it on a battleship catapult!

I found a 1/32 scale catapult on line but it costs around 150 bucks to rich for my blood.

I’m glad you’re ready to start. Dio or not this is a fantastic kit and bigger than people think!

No doubt you’ve been through all the sprues etc and looked through the instructions

I must point out that Eduard have brought out some etched sets which really do add to the kit, They are really worth using just to add that extra detail to bring a stunning kit into the royal class when time is taken.

They are:

32691 Seatbelts - replace the moulded on ones. Instantly looks much better

32681 Interior detail set. - Adds lots of things, replaces one or two items and adds colour instrument panels etc.

32267 Exterior details. - Extra detail for the engine etc.

JX119 Canopy mask - You really need this for that huge glass canopy!

When it comes to the rigging round the floats I would use 0.5mm black nylon thread. Eather leave it black or paint it a steel colour.

Decide first how you are going to build it… wings folded or not. It will help!

Looking forwards to seeing your build pics

James

I found a couple of Lufttwaffe pilot figures on line that I would like to use for the taxiing dio one is seated and the other is standing on the wing.

I have a few pictures of the plane I still have to do some weathering and finish the base.

Sheesh…just fast-forward to the end why don`t ya…lol. Looks good…got any WIP pics?

It looks good, but it doesn’t look like you used the correct splinter pattern shades of RLM 72/73

I used Model Master Acryl numbers RLM 72,73 and 65.

Just dont take off in rough seas[^o)]

At about 0.50 youll see what i mean.

Build looks fantastic.

Here is my Arado with the corect RLM 72 & RLM 73 shades as shade matched to original luftwaffe paint chips

If you look at my earlier post I give the correct shades and colour matches to the Vallejo paint range. I also posted recently a complete 100% shade match to original Luftwaffe paint chips.

All seaplanes and maritime recon aircraft had the same RLM 72 & 73 colours on the upper surfaces throughout the war. The ones in the Med theatre might have had the lower surfaces repainted in the Med theatre lower surface colours but I have not been able to confirm that.

Your Arado looks fantastic and I hope you did have a fun time building it. Did I not say that there was more to this kit than you think!

James

Hi guys the Arado 196 is finished I have it setting on a ocean made of painted aluminum foil the base is an upside down picture frame with the battery compartment under the water.
