Although I have been a frequent visitor to the ships forum, and even left a reply or two, this is my first time for posting my own work. Feel free to comment, and offer advice etc. One of my reasons for posting this is that I couldn’t find any threads specifically about the Pamir with pics (which I was hoping to find to help me along).

This is my 4th build for sailing ships, and obviously I still have a lot to learn, but felt it was good enough not to totally embarrass me here. This is not really a build log but a review of the problems I ran into, i.e. the quality of the model.

Overall I was really happy w/ the detail and fit of the pieces. There were some problem areas I will show down the line here. Very little flash and no injection points that were an issue. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow with the exception of the rigging. I actually ended up leaving off about 1/3 of the rigging, not being able to interpret what should be done exactly and the amount of rigging at this scale was frankly a bit beyond my skill and level of masochistic tendencies. I had originally planned to rig her w/ out sails, but decided that with this class of ship, its real magnificence shows in full sail. I added the boats from the racks that I cut off to the poop deck (?). Seemed wrong to have only two boats for the entire ship, and they don’t seem out of place there. the position of the davits for the forward boats doesn’t make any sense to me, but the ones aft worked out pretty well.

I added the crane hooks with some copper wire that I bent to shape and ended up repositioning the crane arms so that the sails would fit.

this kit did not have any rigging blocks so I used some brass crimping beads I found in a craft store, the crane hooks and blocks are certainly not to scale, but felt it was a good trade off for the overall effect. if you look close, you can see that the shrouds at the top did not have enough length to fit correctly. This was the same for all three masts. There was no getting around it that I could figure out.

Thanks 1943 Mike, for the simplified pic uploading hint! I’ve been using a far more complicated way to get pics on the forum, but it’s so much easier the way you just indicated! For some reason, I was copying the wrong style of link from Photobucket…by using the direct link version from Photobucket, I can post pics here just by clicking on the insert image button from here.

Yeah! K. here’s the rest:

The text didn’t come out too good in the pic… says fantail rail is poorly molded and did not match very well, but the upside is the other railings were easy to bend and held their shape for gluing.

Looking back on it, I probably could have rebuilt them from some evergreen so that they fit correctly. Live and learn.

Just as a test I’m inserting the URL of one of your images on Photobucket in this reply. It seems to work fine.

Please don’t take offense but did you insert the correct URL? (In this case it’s: http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p715/arnie5214/Presentation2_zps1f896ef9.jpg

I’m no techie but you do know that you have to right click (in Windows - which is the only OS with which I’m familiar) the image and then click “properties”. That will give you your URL which you then copy (I always paste it on Word Pad just in case) and insert in the window I showed above.

Again, my apologies if I’m telling you stuff you already knew.

Nice work! I like the ship, plenty of detail…I especially appreciate the subtle color highlights on the sails, give it just the right amount of weathering!

And I couldn’t help but notice the big Testors hobby mat! I had one of those when I used to build as a kid! I totally need to pick one up! Good times!

Believe it or not, they’re the vacuum form sails from the kit. They actually had some good detail and once I airbrushed some deck tan for weathering, they came out pretty nice. Funny, that’s invariably the first comment people make about it. Normally don’t like the kit sails and skip them, but as I said earlier, with a ship of this class, its full glory is in it being fully rigged for sail.
