Revel Germany S Boot?

Ahoy to all you swabbies! (really corny I know)

I usually hangout with the wingy thingy guys but just picked up the R/G S100 Schenlboot. Modelling Madness gave it a good review, what do all of you say?

I have been looking for something unique in the way of paint schemes, but Google has been a bit of a disappointment. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am also considering AM guns and crew members. Aeroclub has the guns but not all of them…can’t wait to get started on this, probably will be around September witth the current real life and group build commitments though…

There’s a PT boat / S-boat / Vosper group build going. Check it out in the GB section.

Unfortunately, as far as interesting camouflage, you will find that the S-100 class was largely in Schnellboot Weiss (White). Not to fault RoG, but the camouflage choices for their subject are boring

Some of the earlier classes wore interesting blue/green tiger stripes or brick patterns.

Check the S-Boat section at Prinx Eugen dot com for some information on these boats

The revell s-100 still gets my vote as the best kit all around…after building over a dozen, I never get bored with them ! The s-boot site mentioned by Ed is fantastic, with a ton of photos.

Happy modeling!

Ed,

Whereas I’ll agree with you in that an overall white boat is “boring” … But, S-100s were never camouflaged.

White paint IS camouflage. Studies by the RN, USN and others determined that white or light gray were effective at night or in overcast contions (think North Sea & English Channel).

The term camouflage is not limited to multi-colors or patterns.

Indeed, I realize that Ed. I was just agreeing with you…

WHITE !?!?!? [V]

AAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH! [censored] and [censored] again !

If there is one detestable thing about the hobby it is dealing with white paint! Is the SBoot Weiss similar to the Tamiya Flat White. I am working on a P51 now and used the Tamiya for the invaision stripes. Airbrushes real well…otherwise…anyone want to buy an S-Boot?[;)]

I’m no expert at S boats, but http://www.prinzeugen.com/colors.htm definitely shows some S boats in camo, looks like pretty trickly camo too.

I think Schnellbootweiss is actually more of a very pale grey. Tamiya XF19 “Sky Gray” is a fairly good match.
See shipcamouflage.com for a list of Kriegsmarine “colour chips”.

Quoted from the prinzeugen.com site …

<<<The official shade adopted for the Schnellboot was “Schnellbootweiss” a neutral pearl grey. This color matches the modern FS paint chip # 17875 and the German RAL paint chip #9002 “Grauweiss”.>>>

It is not a pure white, rather it is a very light gray. Testors MM Acryl II Marine colors has a schnellboote weiss in acrylics. In enamels your out of the bottle (tin) solution if from White Ensign Models in their Colourcoat line.

Yes they are pretty, but they are not S-100 boats in the tiger stripe or brick paint schemes. Note the shape of the bridge in the photos. The S-100 has what was known as a “skullcap” armored bridge. The earlier ones have a more typical bridge with windows. Your model for that is the Airfix E-Boat (with its own attendant problems). In 1:350 scale White Ensign’s Narrow Seas line has one too (very good)

White Ensign Models has Schnellbootweiss in their Colourcoats line. A really good match.

I like to use primer white…it has that perfect “worn” look to it right out of the can. A little bit of buffing with a 3M pad, and you are set. Regarding the camouflage, I’m sure some boats were painted up differently…the Kriegsmarine had some funky camo ideas running all of the time, and a little bit of imagination can go a long way. The captains of the Schnellboots were every bit as resourceful as their allied enemies…and would have used anything at their disposal to try to survive and succeed.

I am returned from vacation and now have my S-boat. Much bigger than I thought. Some flash but overall really nice moldings and detail. The guns are not that bad, may skip the AM parts.

I hope to start closer to fall with this and will post progress photos.

I was wondering how you’re going with your S-Boot.

I got mine out of its wrapping on the weekend. As I don’t carry Revell paints, I was bemused by the colour call-outs. Am I correct in assuming that the interior of the wheelhouse would be in red-brown (primer?)?

Hey joe look at the portfolio in fsm feb 06 issue, has trio of pt boats, includng s-100. I will be dong mine after first of the year, something kind of simular. Check out the elco 80 in the same article
