Retro Airliners & Liveries (1950s-2000) Group Build

RealG, the 747SP arriving at Oshkosh last week!

That was such a cool coincidence! So does Pratt & Whitney actively use this aircraft? If so, what for?

The EAA fly-in at Oshkosh is amazing. I cannot even begin to imagine how they can maintain those vintage planes, much less afford their upkeep!

I think they use the SP as an engine development testbed.

Yep, I’m pretty sure that’s right.

Hey y’all! Just checking in because it’s been a while! How’s progress going?

I have been feeling lousy the past 2 weeks, so zero modeling. Work, eat, sleep. I’ll get back on it, I promise.

Totally relatable! I’ve been taking a break from my projects for a little while and have been doing a tech detox for a while. Can’t wait to get back into it tho! I’ll be hitting the ground running with a Pan-Am A320.

Connie update, 08/11/2025.
Masked the fuselage and sprayed Mr Surfacer 1500 White as primer.
The primer showed me some spots and blemishes that needed some attention.
Another round of primer later.

The COPA 737-200 is just about ready for primer too.

Headway on the Connie Build. I finished the second color - Tamiya gloss white on the upper fuselage. Had to do some polishing to get rid of some bumps and a ridge along the mask tape line. I think it’s looking good. Next, I’ll paint the cowl rings a green to match the color of the decals.

Good idea to paint before adding the outboard vertical stabilizers

For sure, keavedog. Thanks.

First into the production docket for the GB, Heller’s 1/72 L-749 Connie but in Eastern Airline livery, one most folks won’t recall seeing.

Always my favorite livery on a “Connie”

I think masking an airliner livery is tougher than masking camouflage on a warbird. This is just for the cowl rings!

That’s a lot of masking. Was there a procedural reason for not painting the cowl rings prior to installation? I’ve never built an airliner before so I’m ignorant.

fotofrank, your “Connie” is looking fantastic! This plane is one of my all time favorites. Your natural metal finish is very good.

“Hi-di-h-o, neighbors!” Been at the paint bench today. No rain yet. Just a brief update on the Connie build. The cowl rings are painted and so are the de-icer boots. Tomorrow, the airplane gets a good coat of Tamiya X-22 and then on to decals. Oh yeah, and Wilson was funny.

This is a first for me too. Didn’t even think about painting the cowl rings before putting them on the airplane. Sometimes I get lucky and something goes sorta right.

Your “Connie” is looking so good fotofrank! I can’t wait to see it with the decals applied.(My least favorite part of modeling)

Yeah, decals are not always my favorite part of a build. I usually paint what ever markings I can, then do the decals. The decals I bought for this build are laser printed, in 1/144 scale. Cutting the decals from the sheet has been kinda tricky.
