Resin Japanese Super Robot Figures

Some kits have poped up on E-bay and the net that state that they are resin recasts. They are classic Japanese robots like Tetsujin 28 (Iron Man 28) aka Gigantor in the U.S., Mazinger, and Grandiazer just to name a few. How are the quality of these kits because i plan to order one this week? How does the resin take to painting and sanding? I posted this same question in the sci-fi forum as well…

Legal, licensed recasts, or illegal, unlicensed recasts?

Please don’t buy illegal, pirated recasts.

I have no idea…they were on e-bay. I know nothing about them so i decided to ask here. I have never built a resine kit only vinyl. LOL

Yes, it is indeed hard to tell whether a recast is legit or not.

Anyhoo, someone with more resin experience than I should be along to help you out soon! As far as my experience goes with resin, it takes all paints and sanding just fine. Gotta be careful of resin dust when sanding, though. That stuff’ll kill ya, I hear!

DON’T buy recasts, only the original manufacturer will re-issue kits(which is rare).
No japanese manufacturer, sculptor, etc name given = pirate copy.

Working with resin compared to vinyl.
The big difference here is in parts cleanup and assembly.
I recommend 2-part epoxy glue(5~10 min. setting time) for assembling resin kits and you should reinforce all joints by inserting metal pins.

Your primer. putty, etc should work ok for resin and after that there is no difference to the painting process nor any requirements as you paint on top of the primer.

Quality of recasts.
Depends on who makes them, but in general they are of way inferior quality and use poorer/cheaper resin.
Recasters will also often semi-preassemble kits in order to cut down on the number of parts that they need to cast.

Said that even with legit kits the quality can vary betwee makers with the top-of-line kits you open the box, throw in some glue and paints, close the box, shake it and an assembled kit falls out.
