Hey everyone, new to the forums but not to model building! I’ve been building since elementary school but just recently got back into it since I’m in college and got bored haha but I am currently building a 1/48 scale ME-262 from Revell and decided to try a new paint scheme (not one of the schemes from the kit) and it turns out that it actually doesn’t look good. How should I go about repainting it? Is it alright just to paint over the old paint? It’s a pattern of olive drab and flat black, I’m thinking about doing a light grey (have to look at my inventory) with so love drab camo lines. Look forward to hearing back from you guys!
You probably want to strip it off,might be too thick,after priming and adding another coat.I hear that Easy Off oven cleaner will do the job.
It all depends upon your base coat. If your base coat is too thick or textured, yes you will want to strip it off and start over. If not, you can paint on over it and try again. It is very much a judgemnt call on your part. I would be very careful on stripping off base paint though. Easy Off can damage the plastic if it is left on too long. I am a big fan of the Polly S ELO (Easy Lift Off) that Testors has brought back out on their label. Follow the directions carefully and you will be ok.
I recently soaked an old model overnight in a bowl of plain old enamel thinner. The next day not only was the paint gone but so was most of the glue! I ended up calling it a “new” build. The good news was that it allowed me to make a few modifications along the way, and it ended up being a lot of fun.
Oddly enough I was just going to post this same question about the same kit. Mine was a victim of a crash off a shelf and I’d like to redo it. It was painted with a combination of Tamiya acrylics and Model Master enamels sealed with Testors lacquer dullcote. I’ve seen online that Simple Green can work, as well as Castrol Super Clean. Does anyone have any experience with those products? I’d like to find an easy and safe solution.
I use Simple Green, it will work, but the speed isn’t great. It may 12-24 + hours. Age of the paint maybe a factor. But I have, with patience, been able to get enamel as well as acrylic paint off.
I use it as my first choice because of the lessened hazard, compared to other products.
Thanks. The paint isn’t too old, I built it abut 7 years ago. I’ll give the Simple Green a try. I’m pretty familiar with it from my time in the Army.
On the rare occasion that I’ve had to do this, I have used Easy Off oven cleaner, and it works well and relatively quickly, but best to do outdoors with a hose handy. Use an old toothbrush to carefully get off any residue. Slight learning curve as with anything in modelling.
Bottom line is this works.
