Removing Liquid Mask Residue

Today I had my first experience removing MasterMask liquid masking film. What is the best method for removing residue from clear plastic? The clear was dipped in Future prior to masking. I goggled this question but was not satisfied with the results. Should I use a polishing compound or just some dish detergent and water? I do not want to foul it up by experimenting.

And one more comment - man it was definitely not fun removing it!

My previous experience was a dismal failure and I vowed never to use liquid masking agents again. I use foil trim to mask my canopies and remove the residue with GooGone that seems to work quite well. Can’t really help much with the liquid mask other than it should be water soluable. Good luck with the residue. Worst case I suppose you could remove all the Future with some ammonia and start over if you had to.

did you try tamiya tape to get the leftover mask off. And Windex should also work as well.

Windex will remove the Future at the same time. Not a good plan there.

I haven’t worked with mask over Future, but you can try pressing some common masking tape over the liquid mask, and see of that pulls it up. If Future is not affected by water, you can try dampening a q-tip or small paint brush with water (and maybe a little dish detergent), then dab at the residue and see if that loosens it. I have always used MicroMask, and had trouble also getting it off sometimes. At some points, I’ve had to scrape it off with the sharp point of a hobby knife–going very lightly and carefully. Hope you find something that works.

ronl I have had the same trouble you seem to be having. What I did was to bevel the end of a toothpick and scrape off the residue, it did take some time, then I brushed on some future to clean up the clear plastic. What I did discover was that if you leave liquid mask on for more than a week or so it seems to dry out and becomes hard to remove. Anyway I had some paint bleed under troubles with the liquid mask so I now do is dip the clear parts in future , apply the liquid mask and cut out the frames. Then after the frames are cut I dip it in future again. It stops the bleed under trouble and what I found is the mask doesnt dry out. Then to take the mask off I run a new excato blade around the frame so the paint wont chip and use the tooth pick trick again it seems to work very well for me. Heres a picture of the way my canopys are coming out doing them this way, hope this helps you out.

Actually you aren’t supposed to use liquid mask on Future anyways. But the paint will protect the future on the frames anyways so all he would have to do is reapply the future.

I’d try Goo Gone to rmove the mask residue. I haven’t tried it so don’t know if it’ll work, but Goo Gone worked on everything else I used it on. It’s good stuff.

If yo do marr th eFuture when removing the residue, just touch small drops of Future to the area and let dry, this should fix the marrs.

hope this helps.

Just one note of caution when using amonia on any canopy. Amonia will definitly destroy the plastic. I learned this the hard way when soaking the canopy for a harvard mk iv.[8-]
