I am currently building a Whiff aircraft that is going to have a green and red color scheme. The source of my inspiration is that of the Bulgarian PZL P.24’s
I am not sure how to proceed in recreating such a color scheme. I usealy paint from light to darkest color but I can not really tell what is light or dark when comparing red to green.
For masking it would be easiest to first spray the red, mask, then spray green. However I am not sure that green will cover red. Maybe it is better to spray the green first and then the red. I will be using Duplicolor spray can’s. Does anyone have advice?
I don’t think it makes much difference as far as coverage. Like you, I’d probably do the red first, then mask the stripes and do the green. I think one has to visualize the colors in terms of gray scale. In the example you show, they are medium to dark for both colors. If it were dark green over light red, or vis versa, one would have to worry more about color coverage.
I think you need to look at the jobs in terms of which way you would prefer to mask, rather than dark / light.
Given the choice I would most likely do the overall colour, the mask & paint the red - any coverage problems could be addressed with a light (silver possibly) intermediate coat.
It’s a bit like skinning a cat I suppose - not that that’s something I do often though…
You might do a test first; on say a wing of both , red over green and green over red types. That way if there is an unacceptable color change you could make some adjustments- like primer of gray or white over the “base color” to give the red /green their best chance to look like you want.
