Recommend a good storage cabinet for modeling gear

I am looking to try and get a good storage cabinet type thing for all my modeling tools, paints, etc., as I’ve outgrown the one I am currently using, which is just a plastic, three shelf type thing. To this point it has worked well as it’s portable and seals well, but is just a tad small. Ideally a good one would be easily portable as well.

I know with all the experienced hobbyists here, there would be a lot of good ideas presented that I may not have even thought of or knew existed.

I use one of those metal, red multi-drawer tool chests like you get in hardware stores for some of my stuff. Works well and you have many sizes to choose from, but they ain’t cheap.

I’m not sure on the size of what you are currently using, but you did mentioned portable.

How about a tackle box? Take a look:

Plano Tackle Box

I use a Plano for all my motorcycle related tools. The reason is because its very portable. Might work well with Modeling tools, accessories, and paints.

Hope this helps.

I’ll second the tackle box idea. I’m looking to upgrade my carrying capacity, too, and that’s what I’m looking at. It’s not so much the tools, as being able to carry more paints with me.

Don’t know where you live but I have an great 6 drawer metal cabinet about 3 ft tall from Ikea. It keeps all my paints and junk and was relatively cheap.

I have something like this that I got at Wally World for $100.

Mine has all drawers in the bottom, instead of that large compartment. I’ve had it about seven or eight years and still have an empty drawer or two. It’s been awesome. Best part is you can lock it if you have small children, as I do.

Plasticjunkie, notice you label the top of the paint bottles. Great idea.

I do the same using small sticky labels. On my MM paints I put the FS number and the color title. My paints are stored in some very old cigar boxes that came from when my father smoked - must be the early- to mid-1970s. Don’t know what I’m going to do when they finally wear out! My tools are stored in a 6-drawer rolling paper organizer normally for office use. I want to get a desktop toolbox to hold them but they’re just too expensive right now - $1200 in car repairs will do that to ya.

Yes it makes it easy to find what you are looking for. I have been slowly marking more and will eventually have all of them tagged for easy picking.

when your cigar boxes wearout try those kids pencil boxes they come in semi transparent and colors only 2 bucks at most at walgreens or walmart same size as the cigar box

Hi ;

There was at one time a very large tackle box made by PLANO . It had a top compartment with pockets and that opened up to a tray for larger stuff .Then there were four drawers and a side compartment that you could put paint thinner ( In baby food jars ) and spray paint in .

The front dropped down and could be used for getting stuff in order for a project .It could NOT be worked on though . I bought it because of the V.A. volunteer work I did . I needed a convenient , portable , location for all that stuff . It works great still , but , sadly I don’t think PLANO makes that model anymore . I have found some at garage sales .

It seems someone posted a box in their reply .I went to the site and found mine , It’s a PLANO -737-3 tackle box Available at Academy Sporting Goods . I consider this one the best because it accommodates the large Testors Model Master paint containers , Tamiya paint and glue containers and so on . Careful , though . If you do what I did , you’ll have to unload about half so you can pick it up ! I didn’t know , because I do not shop those stores often .

TB, that box is available from Bass Pro Shops (basspro.com) as well. Runs $68 plus shipping.
