Hi, what’s the most realistic way to model grass? The diorama I’m trying to do is a 1/100 scale modern airport scene. A Boeing 747 on the taxiway. Thanks.
Static grass is probably the best looking product available to model grass. It comes in many different colors and can be painted as desired after it has been applied to your diorama. Simply paint the area with slightly diluted white glue, sprinkle it on and then gently blow on it to get it to stand up. The static grass I have averages about .08 inches long, which on a 1/100 scale model would be 8 inches tall, somewhat long for an airport, but so what if the groundskeeper is on vacation. The colored sawdust stuff is going to look rather chunky at this scale. You can also buy static grass in large sheets and just cut it to fit your needs.
You can make your own grass from sawdust too. All you have to do is find some really fine sawdust (for a 1:100 model), glue on base, sprinkle on, let dry and paint. That´s how I´ve done it since I can´t find any static grass or coloured sawdust most of the time.
