Last night I was browsing trough the sporting good section of the supermarket and saw some bike spare parts. I noticed the brake cable look like tow cable, and since they are made of steel they might be just like the real thing. Two of them came in the package and they cost the equivalent of us$1.50
Has anyone tried this?
They seem to gloosy, and I guess they are hard to handle, but I think I’ll give 'em a try for my Stug IV.
[:D] that sounds like a cool idea ,let us know how it turns out.[:D]
Although my first thought is that they would be too stiff to work with and out of scale, I guess anything is worth a try. Let us know how it goes and show us some pics.
You might be able to anneal them to make them more pliable, too.
Has anyone tried picture hanging cable? It might be on the thin side for 1/35th but may work.
I have heard of a lot pepole useing the picture hanging cable.
I made my own tow cables out of very thin bead wire I bought on a spool at Micheals. I used a drill to slowly twist together about eight strands of this wire then I cut the sections I needed to length and gave them a black wash. Then I drybrushed rust paint on the high spots.
I made my own tow cables out of very thin bead wire that I bought on a spool at Hobby Lobby. It’s pliable and works perfectly…
[:D] well i guess we have some more ways to think about doing tow cables.[:D]
Thats what I have used for a Sherman and a T-34. Out of the package, it was actually too thick by a considerable margin. So I unwound it into it component strands. After straightening several strands, I re-spun six strands to make the cable. The most difficult aspect of the process was spinning the strands back together and avoiding overlaps. All in all, they don’t look bad.
abarne,
I have used the picture wire on my 1/25 centurion, and it looks good on the big scale stuff, but I can see how it would be too big for 1/35. How did you manage to unwind that stuff??? looks like it would be a pain to do!!

There’s an awesome little how-to for making tow cables using shipbuilder’s rope and heat-shrink tubing.

I couldn’t find shipbuilder’s rope but waxed linen thread from the jewelry-making section of the local craft store does the job quite well, also…
