Greetings everyone
I am a newbie, and Im trying to build this exhaust system on my workbench where it sucks out all the excessive paint from the airbrush out the window. I know that I need an exhaust fan to begin with, but to be quite honest, I dont know where start, what kinda fan do I need, with what specification, and how to install it… etc.
Any suggestions?
Thank you
Hiya M, and [#welcome]
Here’s a suggestion- ever see those fans that mount in the full height of the window? Ya can get them at Target for about $40-$50, i think. Might take a bit of creativity, but try one of those and spin that bad boy around. That should expel some of the fumes and such outta the work bench area. Just a thought…
I have an exhaust fan from a company (HomeAire) that makes bathroom exhaust and radon mitigation fans. It is small and relatively quiet. If I were to add little rubber feet to its base it would be even quieter. It just sits on an opening over my homemade hood. Ducted to a dryer vent. I added an adjustable elbow to help point the suction in the direction I want it most. It seems to work well keeping the fumes outside the workshop instead of in. I’m planning on a total rework of my workshop this winter, which will include a new built-in paint booth which will include the same fan only isolated and insulated for quieter operation, plus more eye pleasing.

Hey there Rat
I live in an apartament building, hence them big fans are not an option for me. I was thinking more of a mini exhaust fan, if there’s such a thing!!!
Thanx
They do. Check out your local woodworkers supply store, they make bench top dust collection systems. Or invest in a shopvac, get an extra hose to run from the exhaust (blow out) port and stick the other end out the window. The suction side can be hooked up to a cardboard spraybooth or just have the end of the hose in close proximity to your work. The vacs filter will collect the particulates and the fumes will go out the window. Any system not certified for flammable vapors or suspended solids has the risk of creating an explosion.
Yeah, me too. And of course with an apartment, usually you are restricted by your lease as to what you can and can’t have. But the window fan actually works for me though. But actually i have to admit, i really like Hawkeye’s idea better. Good luck!
