RBaer's question about Zimmerit on Tiger IIs, Tiger Is and Panther As

From another thread:

I recently was given the T2 Porsche turret and T1 mid prod, both Tamiya, and am curious if either left the factory w/o zimmerit. Also, I’ve got the old Tamiya Panther A started and wondered the same about it.

'Preciate the help.

RBaer: only the first two pilot Tiger II (porsche turrets) had no zimmerit. All the other remaining ones had it applied. The Tamiya mid Tiger I universally had it too except for 2-3 oddball “hybrids” cobbled together from various chasses (Kamfgruppe Fehrmann). I’m aware of only a single pic of a Panther A w/o zimmert. BTW, use the panther as your practice kit – it’s pretty crude by this decade’s standards. It’s a total travesty that Tamiya still sells that 1972 dog.

Many thanks…As you may have guessed, German WW2 armor is not my main interest, but the two late Tamiya kits are too cool to leave in the stash. The old Panther was intended as a practice kit, plus I’ve always like the look of the Panther and wanted to try the multi-color scheme, and zim.

I’m going to use something a little off-beat to do the zim on the Panther, and evaluate it for the others: wood putty. I’ts water-based, dries in twenty minutes or so, and remains workable until it’s almost completely dry. Plus, it dries nice and smooth (fine texture).

Again, many thanks for the concise info. Now to dig up my few books on German stuff…
