Random model showed up in the mail

So, weirdest thing has happened, and after some research, I’m still at a complete loss. Figured I’d share a fun story, but if anyone has any ideas, I’d love to hear them!

The family and I went away for a week for Spring Break, college campus tours and some tourism. When we returned, there was a package for me. Return address was unfamiliar, and the shipping label looked like it was generated by someone sending from eBay, but I haven’t purchased anything in months. I opened up the package, and it was a plastic model! No note, no receipt, just a boxed model and a piece of foam to keep it from sliding around. It is an airplane, which is pretty much my exclusive area of interest (that and space/sci-fi), but an earlier WWI-era model, which is not my typical era.

I have no idea where this came from. Maybe Santa was a few months late and used USPS…?

I’m trying to decide whether to write a letter to the return address to double-check, possibly somehow it was sent to the wrong person? Except it has my name and address just fine, so no confusion, there. Dunno, but…weird. ¯\(ツ)

This gets more and more weird. Trying to do a little digging to figure this out, I noted that (a) I definitely didn’t order this, it’s not in my eBay history, (b) the postage was printed in March 2025!?! and (c) USPS tracking says the package is still being held pending postage being paid, so…this is just crazy…

Thank the modeling gods and build it!

Does the return address show up on google as a residence, or a business? A secret admirer maybe?

What a fun mystery. Not fun for whoever’s waiting by the mailbox for their new kit, I suppose…

Could also be a scam. There is one going around where something shows up unordered, including a QR code to return or contact support. When you scan the code, it takes you to a compromised website to steal your info or hack your device. I’m not sure exactly how it works, but use a lot of caution.

It could also be where it’s shipped to you (kind of a dead drop address) and the sale gets a false high rating for the seller, artificially inflating their scores (or something similar).

Now that my conspiracy theories have been voiced, maybe it is a secret gift - in any case, build and enjoy it.

This is what I was going to suggest.

Cheers,
Mark

You’re welcome… just kidding

Figured it out! I purchased from the eBay seller last year, looks like somehow an old label got applied to someone else’s more recent purchase. I’ve offered to ship it along, otherwise I’ve saved the seller and will purchase more models from them. Accidental shipment may not be worth the cost of dealing with more shipping, but I can at least support them.

Mark…you and Tom can always send me stuff, don’t have to make it a secret!
