RAF 4 and 26 Squadron

I am doing research into the wartime experience of Tan Kay Hai, a Singapore-born, Canadian-trained pilot who flew for the RAF during WW2 in the skies over North West Europe. I managed to find out that he flew Spitfires and Mosquitoes, but I managed to find out also that he flew in Mustang Is out of Gatwick Airfield. That would make 4 and 26 Squadrons the prime candidates. I am keen to find out the actual serial numbers and codes of the aircraft he flew, can someone point me in the right direction?

Any help appreciated, thanks!

All I can find is a couple of Mustang serial numbers in my ancient reference book.
4 sqn flew AM207 in mid '43 & 26 sqn had AL966 at that time. It seems neither of them had Squadron codes, though 26 had used RM on its P40’s earlier in the war. Sorry I can’t be of more help but maybe this can help to pin down other Mustangs. I’m sure I’ve seen a photo of this guy somewhere.
Pete

Thanks mate! Any help appreciated.

Hi Terence

I too am researching into Tan Kay Hai’s history. According to the Gatwick Aviation Society, Tan Kay Hai flew photo-recon Mustang FR934 with 2nd Squadron in June 1944.

I have spoken to Tan Kay Hai’s son in Singapore and he is putting me in touch with his niece, WG Tan’s granddaughter, who is also doing research into his operational records.

If you are located in Singapore, give me a call at 97649674 so we can hook up

You might like to try writing to RA F Innsworth, which is the records depot. They keep records of personell from way back…They might be able to help with his service history.
The address is;RAF PMC,
RAF Innsworth,
Glocester,
England.
Failing that, how about the Imperial War Museum in London or the RAF Museum.Hendon.
I have a book somewhere with the historys of the RAF Squadrons but i cant find it!
Hope this helps,
Merv
