Hi to all,
I am spray painting my current project testors chrome with an olive drab strip doen the center of the aircraft. My question is which color to put on first. The chrome is testors gloss chrome spray (I believe its enamel) and the olive drab is also testors spray, however, it is a flat.
I know the general rule is to put on the light coat first, but was unsure about mixing the gloss and flat’s.

Metallic paints tend to be less resistant than non-metallic ones, and I’ve heard many (and also experienced some!) horror stories about metallic paints being lifted off the model by masking tape… My suggestion would be to spray the olive drab first (using masking tape so that you do not paint the soon-to-be silver areas), then use masking tape on the olive drab areas to spray the rest of the aircraft in silver.
djmodels is correct. However, be sure to let that olive paint completely dry and cure. You don’t want to do all that masking only to pull the paint off when you remove the tape. Been there, done that!!
can you shoot the olive drab with Future before putting on the masking tape??? To help insure the paint doesn’t come off???
Probably not a bad idea to Future the O.D. strip before you paint the silver. I’d also suggest very lightly sanding the area where the O.D. is to go to improve paint adhesion. The testors gloss chrome paint will probably be thick enough to hide the sanding. There are also a number of other Testors products (the Metalizer range) who can give a very nice polished (or buffed) finish, although they’re very delicate and don’t stand up to handling or tape very well.
I don’t think spraying future over a color will help prevent it from lifting with the masking tape. After all its still the paint that is touching the model, not the future. Good surface prep is important. Make sure the model is squeaky clean and the paint sticks better
