Quick enamel question

Can you wash enamel over cured acrylic? I was hanging out with Miguel Jiminez down at AMPS and he told me you could. He even did a quick demo, but everyone I talk to says you can’t?

You can certainly apply/wash enamels directly over Tamiya acrylics.

I have, in the past applied clean Mineral Turpentine, White (Mineral) Spirits and Naptha (in the form of Zippo fluid) directly to cured Tamiya Acrylics to test and observed no ill effects.

Can’t speak for other brands, but Tamiya’s acrylics are pretty much bulletproof after curing. (unless you hit them with alcohol or lacquer thinner)

Having said that, as always, if you are in any doubt, test on an expendable subject before doing it on a live build. [;)]

I’m not exactly sure what defines cured Future but i have used enamel thinner to remove enamel paint that was sprayed over a week old coat of Future and the enamel paint came off fine but the Future was hazed . It was easily turned back to clear with another coat of future .

Seeing is believing. Did the quick demo work?

yes

Thanks for the response guys. The demo did seem to work but still it made me nervous lol.

I do it all the time. I much prefer a dissimilar wash of enamel over either acrylic base colors or acrylic top coat. My expereince is that enamels do better as washes over acrylics than acrylics do over enamels. Not to say acrylic washes dont work, but they tend to require more effort and are more “complicated”.
