Quetzalcoatlus Dinosaur

I’m a sucker for dinosaurs and when I saw this Quetzalcoatlus kit at Wonderfest last year, I had to grab it! Produced by Shane Foulkes of Cretaceous Creations, it’s 1/15 scale and approximately 13" tall with the base.

I started with the base by painting various shades of earth colors and then used AV washes to bring out the detail. Still need to add a little more vegetation.

The little T-Rex is a nice addition to the kit. It gives a sense of whimsy and tells a story. Painted with acrylics, I used various acrylic and oil washes. Painting the stripes on the tail were a challenge!

I’ve now shifted focus on the big bird and started with the head. After laying down the base colors, I added mottling detail with acrylics then transparent colors to blend it in. Finished with some light drybrushing. BTW - the eyes are glass!

Now on to the rest of the body!

Super job on that head. You’d think it’s alive if it wasn’t dead. Ver well done.

Rob, your work on these “creatures” is amazing! The eyes look so life-like along with the scales/textures of their bodies.

Outstanding builds of these Cretaceous period creatures.

Slightly off topic here, but for anybody interested in building dinosaur model kits, especially painting them, viewing the articles and videos at this website may help as Stan Winston and his company created all the dinosaurs for the Jurassic Park film series.

Seeing your Quetzalcoatlus kit made me think of these two Stan Winston articles.

Update: Slowly adding color to the body using various shades of transparent browns and tans.

Once I’m happy with the results I’ll switch focus to the wings.

I’m in the home stretch! Mostly finished with the body. The eyes are covered with Silly Putty to protect them from overspray.

Just painted the wing interiors with various layers and shades of reds, tans and browns.

All that’s left are the wing exteriors and some final touch ups on the legs. I’ve got one week to get this done for WonderFest!

Scenes like this are enjoyable to look at for the reason that you mentioned: They tell a story. Aside from the storyline, your work so far is very convincing Rob. With a week remaining to finish this up I’d say that there’s a good chance you’ll make it in time too. You’ll have to let us know how it does in the show.

That’s neato-burrito! I was starting to wonder why the model was not in the flying state but realized that the landed configuration was more interesting.

Hey, most of us build our airplane kits gear-down and on the ground.

Your paintwork looks fabulous by the way.

That is just awesome! Great looking skin tone variations. Apparently it was quite a big critter!

All I’m going to say is that you have some mad painting skills. Do you give lessons?

Thanks.

Funny enough, I’ve taught Dino 101 painting classes at WonderFest and Nats for years…

Well, never say never!

It was suggested that I add some color around the eyes (think turkeys), so I painted some blues, reds and pinks. Gives it a little more pizazz!

Now I’m Done!
