in migs explanation about using pigments, he states to use turpentine to moisten it. is that the same as mineral spirits?
Yup, same - same.
ok, if you use the same procedure, do you find that when the paintbrush touches the plastic, the liquid kinda rushes out? spreading real fast? i’m not sure if i have too much spirit on the brush, or that is just the way spirits work. but if i do an oil wash with mineral spirits, when i touch the brush to the model, it looks like the paint was just waiting to get off that brush, and trying to spread itself out as far as it can go…not the best with words here, lol. it spreads kinda like wildfire.
If you use a big brush, filled with wash, that is exactly what happens. I don’t use MIG’s pigments, but it is the same as a wash with any other paint. It is fine if you are doing a large area, overall wash. For picking out small areas, I use a fine brush with a small amount of the wash and basically do a pin-wash. This is where you just put it in select areas, such as vents, grills, around panel lines, etc. to bring them out.
thanks arty, yeah i was refering to a total wash with oils i kinda use a big brush when i do it. it just kinda spreads out rapidly and dosen’t look uniform, i think i have the mix too dark. and i am going to try the pin washes on my current kit. about the MIG’s i just recently got them, so this will be my first time trying them out with turprntine as he calls it, i have clear orderless mineral spirits, so we’ll see how that goes. thanks
Are you doing it on a flat surface or gloss surface? When I first washed my Fly, I forgot to shoot it with Future and as soon as I touched the brush with thinner to the surface of the tank it just spread everywhere like crazy. I dipped my brush in thinner but then dabbed most of it out on a paper towel on mine.
i think that might be why. it was on a flat surface. i have yet to spray a gloss or future on my model. just scared of messing it up i guess. so airbrush pure future on it? or do i dillute it with something?
I always use pure Future. Just do it in light coats. It doesnt have to be show room finish on a new car either. Just remember, many thin coats instead of one big one or it will run.
thank you very kindly sir

Washes will “bloom” on a flat surface and create tide marks when they dry, very useful for some effects, less so for others. The tooth of the matte surface creates all kinds of surface area for it to run to and it will spread as far as the fluid mechanics of the thinner will take it. [:D]
I spray Future unthinned as well, straight out of the bottle. Cleanup with Windex when done, just spray a paint cup full through the AB followed by clean water and voila. Keep your distance when you spray, do the thin multiple passes. Future will “self level” but if it gets too thick on veritcal surfaces it will self level all the way down to the edges and then pool. Not the ideal result, but if it happens, you can use Windex on a q-tip and gently remove the excess without having to strip the whole model and start over.
