A collective thank-you, I’m sure!

Fade to Black…

Here is another good website for this topic
http://www.globemaster.de/tailcodes.html

I know this is an old topic but I stumbled across it and since I know something of this, can’t help but reply…

ZZ is used for the 18th Fighter Squadron, currently based in Japan, and sporting a Chicken for its squadron patch. ZZ represents the last of the last, and the chicken is something no warrior would ever care to wear.

In the early days of the Korean war, the 18th was stationed at Koonsan. When the North Koreans approached and Koonsan’s overrun was imminent, ops got maintenance to get them airborne so as to defend the base. Once airborne, they flew to Japan. Meanwhile back at Koonsan, the maintenance guys were hung from the hanger rafters with .032 safety wire. That safety wire can still be seen in the old hanger today.

Because of this, the 18th will wear ZZ and the Chicken patch, and will not be allowed to rotate back to the US until they prove themselves in combat.

I have been out of the Air Force for many years and with the Iraq fighting in the early 90’s and now, they may well have proven themselves by now. I don’t know.

Also, ZF… Zeigler Field. Property was bought from Mr Zeigler to build Homestead AFB. Yep, was there too, F4-D’s (31st TFS “Emerald Knights”).

I’ll throw my [2c]worth into the pot. The 18 Tactical Fighter WING is made up of 3 Squadrons, (I can’t remember the specific numbers) . They flew F-100s in the late 50s, transitioned to the F-105 Thud in the early 60s, then when all the Thuds went stateside in 68, the 18th went to Phantoms. They kept them till 79 or 80 when they switched to F-15A/B Eagles. Somewhere along the line they went to C and D model Eagles. That wing has been at Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan for about 50 years now. They sent a bunch of pilots and Thuds to Thailand in 64 and 65, TDY assigned to Wings already there. They most certainly did distinguish themselves in combat. I won’t even get into the Pueblo incident in 68 or the tree chopping incident in 74.
I don’t know what happened in 1950 in Korea, but please don’t insinuate any lack of testicular fortitude in the years since then. And yes, I am aware of what the wing crest looks like. I would be D _ _ _ proud to wear it anytime.
