Does anyone know–were the FW190D’s of the JV44 Early- or Late versions of the Focke-Wulf FW190D? I want to buy replacement resin landing flaps, and I need to know which version the “Red 1” of the JV44 Squadron it was. Thanks!
Rory
Red 1 had a blown canopy and a late 3 piece gun cowling (no bumps) so my guess would be the later version, but as with all late war LW aircraft saying anything with certainty is difficult.
The Werke Nr. of that aircraft was 600424 if that helps you out any.
I just found a site that said the “Red 13” of the JV44 was an early variant, but nothing about the “Red 1” specifically…rather frustrating. Any websites documenting the differences between early and late Dora 9’s? Thanks!
Yup, Red 13 had the characteristics of an earlier aircraft. Sorry don’t know of any websites off the top of my head just working off my own references here which are not as complete as I’d like on 190D-9’s.
Jerry Crandall at Eagle Editions http://www.eagle-editions.com/page2.htm is an expert on these matters, if you drop him an email he may be able to help you out.
Thank you! I emailed Jerry Crandall…I suspect the Red 1 was probably a late version because of the blown canopy. I also asked him about his Galland Circus book–I would love to get a copy, but it seems impossible to find.
I’m pretty sure that ‘red 1’ was a late model D-9. It definitely had the blown hood canopy. This website shows it with the later style flat gun cowl:

I’m not entirely sure it had the flat gun cowl though. Most profiles I’ve seen show it with the lumps on the gun cowl, and the only pictures I’ve seen of it support that. I can say that JV44 was delivered 4 190D9’s. One early model, two late model ones and a proto-type D-11. Seeing as though Red 13 was definitely an early model and Red 1 wasn’t a D-11, I reckon that makes Red 1 a later model one.
Should be enough info to choose the right flaps I hope.
Hey guys,
As far as I know, “Red 1” is a late 600000 series Dora. It has the late 3-piece gun cowl without bumps. This doesn’t mean that the gun cover isn’t bulged to accomodate the MG131s, but early and mid-production cowls had a bump on top of each gun bulge. The D-11 had a flat gun cover because the MG131s were deleted in favor of MK108 30mm cannons in the outer wings.
The Wurger Staffel of JV44 had four aircraft assigned, all of which had red “staffelkenziffern” (staffel ID numbers). They were D-9s Red 1,3, 13 and Red 4 was the D-11.
Red 1 was Leutnant Heinz Sachsenberg’s mount. Even though he was the lowest ranking pilot in the Schwarm, he was the unit’s commander, as he had over 100 kills, considerably more than Hptm Waldemar Wubke, Oblt Klaus Faber or Oblt Karl-Heinz Hoffman.
I’m working on Red 3 and 13 right now and will finish those two and Red 1 in August.
