This is my first ever armor model, and I have a newbie question about the assembly. In step 1 (told ya, newbie question) where you assemble the drive sprockets and the idler wheels, the instructions say to insert a “poly cap” little black plastic cylinder inside the joint between the two halves, but to not apply cement. Does this mean to just not apply cement to the poly cap, but do cement the two mating surfaces of the wheel halves, or to not apply any cement at all to the wheel?
Justin, Don’t apply glue to the poly cap. The cap allows easy removal of the sprockets/ wheels. Just glue the surfaces around the cap, taking care not to let any glue touch the area around or inside the cap.
Personally I hate these things, they really don’t allow for a positive connection between the “axle” and wheel, sometimes causing the tracks to splay out under tension…of course I am speaking of the rubber band style tracks.
I am a newbie to armor kits myself, so others may offer better sugestions or help.
Wow you guys are fast. Thanks for the replies, both answered my question exactly. Unfortunately, I am using the rubbery tracks; my budget ran out after photo-etch and metal gun barrel, but before I could get any individual link tracks.
Thanks for the advice TB; what are magic tracks? I’m planning on getting a Dragon kit for my next armor model as they seem to be very well liked. This isn’t my first model, just my first armor model (not that I’m any great expert or anything). Apart from some Sci-Fi models for gaming, and stuff from when I was a kid, I’ve done a couple of other Tamiya’s, a motorcycle and car.
magic traks are the single link tracks included in the Dragon kits.
They’re a pain to get used to, but there are plenty of ways too make 'em look good. just glance thru some of the previous forums, and there’ll be plenty of threads about em.
good luck on the build. Post pics of the finished thing if you get the chance!
