question about resin cockpits

Hello, last night I was looking at my stash and decided I need to make a dent in it. I have this academy p-38 that I bought about 3 years ago. When i opened the box about 3 months later, no decals. lost reciept. so I bought new ones on squadron. while I was there I picked up a resin set for the interior. when I got the stuff, I felt sort of intimidated by all that superfine detail, and let it sit. I really need to get this one going, if only for closet space[:D]
is there any tips anyone can give me on getting started, basically what do you wash resin with, prime, etc. also, how does this set fit into the academy 1/48 p-38J. Its the legend cockpit set.
Thanks for any tips you guys have!

Matt:

First you’ll want to wash everthing GENTLY in a mild soap and water solution - use liquid dish soap, such as Dawn or Joy. I used an old toothbrush to gently clean out nooks and crannies. I then put the parts on a towel, and let them sit in front of a fan overnight (on low or medium - you don’t want to blow small parts away!).

You can prime, but I have trouble finding resin primer here in Cincinnati. I simply painted onto the bare resin. I airbrushed the basic interior color using Testors Model Master enamels; I thinned with lacquer thinner to give it a “bite”. Let that paint dry overnight and you should be set.

I believe Gunze Sangyo makes a resin primer, someone else might offer more. If anyone has a better process, or finds fault with mine, please speak up.

Good luck!

I’ll add what i prime resin with… Mr.surfacer cut 50/50 with Lacq. thinner. I havent had problems other then getting Mr. Sufacer consistantly.

To continue that thought… after the initlal interior color, everything will look a bit ‘flat’. Wash the interior with a thinned darker color and all the details will really pop out. If you want, you can add to that by drybrushing a lighter shade on the surface areas, and perhaps use a silver artiist pencil to add scruff marks on the floor & corners.

thanks for the info guys!

I’d read this…it’s been written on stone tablets to be carried down a mountain.
