Hi all, I’ve been lurking on this forum for quite awhile, soaking in all the great info. Well, I’m on my second model, and thanks to all of you, I’m loving this hobby!
This is a DML 6291, beautiful kit, much too good for my hands! I’ve been trying all different types of weathering and am hoping for some feedback (read criticism). Thanks again!
Thanks, ps1. At least I posted the pics right! Still need to do the pioneer tools, vision slits (they are slits, aren’t they?) exhaust, gun barrels, and I’m really not sure what else!
It looks really, really good, for the color, overall…I just think that they “gray” is a bit too light–and that’s funny for me, cause I’m usually the one screamin’ about lightening the base coat and “scale distortion”! [:-^]
Just curious–what led you to use such a light gray? I guess it could look as if it were post-whitewash, but for a straight-gray color it should probably be a shade or two darker–you might be able to tint it with a black wash?
The weathering looks really nice though, honestly! [:D]
Hey Doog, here I was thinking I needed to lighten it up a little more. I guess doing the light tan spray is off the list for now! It’s just that I could hear your voice ‘doesn’t he know the base color fades? Too dark, too dark’ [swg] Actually, I thought the MM panzer gray looke too dark straight up, so tried to do the center of the panels with gray/buff mixed and kept adding more (too much). Well, my airbrush skills aren’t the same in my waking life as they are in my dreams, and the center of the panels turned into pretty much the whole tank. So…I then tried to do a post shade with a black/gray mix. Making it darker should be pretty easy, will dullcote make it darker in the end?
True panzer gray (if you can call anything “true”) was very dark, almost black, in terms of its shade of gray. For example, take a look at these color wartime shots and compare the vehicle color to that of the crewmen’s uniforms. Their uniforms are black.
Now having said that, the effects of dirt/dust, etc. would lighten the shade in the field, so some variations are possible. The trend among modellers is to severely lighten the gray and/or go for a bluish tint, both of which are for artistic reasons vs. accuracy. A common struggle in this hobby. [;)]
Wow, Bill, I knew they were dark but didn’t realize they were that dark! More like a light black, so MM panzer gray out of the bottle seems to be already color scaled, though too dark for my taste. Nice pics, thanks, though somebody should tell those guys to beat their tanks up a bit to look more like our models!
Thanks fast lane. And, hey, welcome to the forums!
Hehe, wouldn’t it be a lot easier if they had built their tanks easier to model? I think they did the opposite with that zimmerit and tiny complicated too clamps.
On another note, nice look panzer! I too kind of like a lighter gray.
I am all for scale effect, especially within my aircraft model background, but there seems to be either “it is too light” or “too dark” sub group. I guess neither are wrong but I must admit some models I have seen in overall German Grey are way too light. However some disruptive camo on DY base models I have seen conversely are far too dark. It is confusing, but I will stick with the smaller the scale, the lighter the model (well not too much anyway!)
I wouldn’t worry about the color…In my opionion the overall feel is spot on! Without hi-jacking your thread, and re-igniting the color picture depate…color pictures from WWII are not the best, some have been colorized after the fact, and most are way off the color scale.
sure it could be a litle darker, but you did a great job on the build and weathering so far…one you can be proud of.
I think it looks good. As for the shade of gray, it looks like a tank that has been neglected out in the sun for a long period of time, one that didn’t see too much service, or at least was well maintained, and also in a warmer climate, hence the minimal rust on the tracks. Thereby giving a nice sunbleached finish. Thats my perception of it.
I built Italeri’s version of the PZIV not too long ago for a GB on here. Turned out nicely too. Sitting in the display case at the local hobby shop. While it wasn’t my second model it was my second armor model that I completed. You did a good job, keep it up, practice makes perfect.
This is only your second model? Forget the colour, this is superb! Your have weathered your Panzer just nicely (that is another subject that can be hotly debated…lol). I can only hope that my armor comes out like that one day…[bow]
