I have been looking to improve my reference collection and am looking for some good books on the PZ IV.
I have to pretty much buy online so I don’t want to waste my money on something thats a waste of my time. I see squadron has a few different ones but I would like some first hand info.
A rock-solid choice would have to be Walter Spielberger’s Panzer IV and it’s Variants, Schiffer Publishing, ISBN: 0-88740-515-0, around $35. There are many others, but this one sets the standard to follow.
I’d like to help, but I have the same as you. Actually Osprey’s New Vanguard series has many great books and I’m sure they have one. They are small paperbacks with line drawings and developmental info. Useful.
try the Squadron book, “Panzer IV in Action” it covers alot of detail about all the Variants of the Pnz. IV, to be honest it’s not a technical drawing book, but it has alot of great wartime pics of each variant, and displays the specific unit variations well! It has a great colour scheme chart in it… that’s my bible thus far!
Squadron/signal publications has one called “Panzer IV” by Kevin Hjermstad. It has a boat load of photos and a pile of color prints by Don Greer, not a bunch of line drawings, but some. I don’t know if it’s still in publication, but its ISBN is 0-89747-413-9. It makes a great companion piece to their “Panzer IV in Action” with almost no duplication of photos.
Another good PZ IV book is by Tanks in Detail “PzKpfw IV Ausf A to J” by Jonathan Forty. It has a lot of good interior and exterior photos in b & w and in color. The book also contains information on the development and improvement of each version and a section on camouflage and markings for various units. I bought it at my LHS for just over $20. HTH
