I have never worked with these before, and am looking at getting some. But I am confused, what is the difference between, say, Tamiya basic type which will cost me AUS$9.00 and Testors contour that will cost me only AUS$3.00??

Testors Contour putty is, in a nutshell, crud. It has the properties of concrete. Very coarse grain, dries rock hard, and impossible to get a smooth finish, if you can get it to stick to your model - most times it just crumbles and falls off.
I haven’t used Tamiya putty but it is far and ahead, much better than Testors putty. At present I use Squadron “green” putty (it’s just my preference, I am familiar with its properties), which is also around the AUD$9.00 mark.
If you are going to be building a lot, I would suggest going to KMart, BigW or an auto accessories place (eg. Supercheap) and picking up a tub of (insert generic brand name) automotive “spot putty”, which is essentially the same as the common hobby putties but much cheaper. Price wise, I am talking approx. $15 (or less) for a 375g tub, as compared with $9 for a 32g tube of Tamiya putty or $9 for a 65g tube of Squadron putty.

EDIT: If you do get automotive putty, get the “1 part” type, not the 2 part (putty/hardener) type you have to mix.

Also look at Squadron White putty, very similar to the green but has a finer grain and is easier to feather.
