Putty and sand paper grit

Hey all,

I am building my first aircraft and I have never had to deal with seams, so I am going to use putty for the first time. What grit should I use to minimize scratches to the model.

I am using Squadron White putty. Kit is a 1/48 Tamiya F4U-1D.
