I work for the railroad and recently we’ve been doing maintenance work out in the desert north of Las Vegas. The Air Force puts on one great show for me by practicing aerial combat right over us.[:)] Frequently the plane that is being pursued will eject what appear to be flares. Am I correct in thinking that these “flares” are chaff? Thanks.
Chaff and Flare are 2 very different things. A flare is used to “confuse” a heat seaking misile and chaff is used to “confuse” a radar guided misile.
A flare will burn and emit a bright light while chaff is more like shreds of aluminum foil.
Thanks for clearing that up. I had been thinking that perhaps the flares I saw were somehow associated with the firing off or emitting of the chaff. Thanks for explaining that to me.
