Proper Primer/Undercoat for a gloss red finish?

I plan to build this Bel Air kit with a red finish instead of the blue. I’m an armor guy so I’m kinda going out on a limb with this one. Pretty sure it comes in white plastic. I’ve heard that its important to have a certain color primere/undercoat depending on the color of the top coat you want to use…

What works best for gloss red?

Building it for my kid who loves 50’s American cars. Easier to spend $21 than $20,000.

For me white has always worked good for red…that or a light gray.

White basecoat for sure!

I was extremely happy with the red paint here.Both were Tamiya rattle can colors.

Looks sharp, krow…this is good info for me since I’m in the middle of doing a Gee Bee R-1 racer. Not to hijack the thread, but as an aside how’d you do the black separation between the red and white? Thanks…

Red Oxide primer makes a good primer for red. It is kind of a darkish red/maroon. It is available in auto parts stores and some hardware stores.

White , for a few kits I read a build that said to hit the kit with a light coat of pink before paining it, works great with tamiya Italian red
