propellers for Spruce Goose

I picked up one of those old 1:200 Entex kits at a yard sale for $2. It had only 1 of the 8 prop units. I thought “what the hell, its only $2” I experimented with the teeth from a plastic haircomb. but they were too wide. Filing down 32 seperate prop blades will reduce me to a gibbering mess. I thought about showing the props spinning ? Clear plastic discs ? Has anyone tried this ? Would you paint a black ring around the edge to simulate the propeller tips ? If it wasnt for the fact that both my boys want to keep it, it would be in the trash by now.

You can cast the props using RTV and make as many resin copies as you need.Ace resin makes a nice complete kit.

I think that a clear plastic disc would be fine. It might even look a bit more accurate in the smaller scale. The only things I can think of-

-The edges of the disc would be yellow, due to the yellow warning tips.

-DON’T try to use black on ANY part of the disc. Moving props are VERY transparent, especially black ones. To show some variety, airbrush clear flat on the disc in several locations. This will dry cloudy, and give a nice effect.

-Try to keep the yellow solid on the edges, but transparent (light airbrushing, I think…) on the faces.

Now remember, I haven’t tried any of these techniques myself. I personally don’t like any methods for making props look like they’re spinning (apart from them actually spinning) becuase I have yet to see any that really achive that effect. But grab a reference photo, and go ahead and try it. You might suprise yourself!

Good luck!
