I think I read somewhere that a red nose signified the squadron leader - can anyone confirm this? Any significance for the other colors such as black, sky and perhaps white? Thanks to any and all that reply.

The spinners fell under the dirction of the painting orders and some were indeed painted different colours but were not official. I read once where a squadron was given notice to comply with orders since they had their spinners all painted in their respective “Flight” colours i.e. red flight, blue flight, etc.
I suggest reference photos. I realize that trying to figure out the tone of grey in a B&W photo is very dificult. Debates on colours of spinners and also entire a/c rage on, so I say, welcome to the debate.
