As far as I can tell, this was a program to turn a US PB4Y-1 into a radio controlled flying bomb. A Lockheed Ventura flew “backup” and controlled the PB4Y-1 en route to the target. I’m familier with the operation and the results (a spectacular failure, and a possible success), but (as I plan to model this pair of PB4Y-1 and Ventura), I need some information on the actual aircraft. Paint scheme, unit numbers, wether or not turrets were fitted to the PB4Y-1, etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Excellent. Thank you very much. I now have a tail number for the Liberator, which is (in my opinion) most important. Preliminary research has made me think that both aircraft were wearing the standard three-color Navy Camoflage. Anyway, thank you very much. It’s an excellent start.
Just my opinion Lucien, but I think that the Privateer would be stripped down of anything of value, blisters, guns, radar, etc. to make it lighter and better able to carry explosives. It could also have had it’s cockpit glass be removed to make it easier for the crew to bail out. Also, the PV-1 probably had extra radio attenaes on it to link the two aircraft.
