Printing white decals on a color printer - what decal paper and what technique?

I know that you can print color decals on water transfer decal paper. What I don’t understand is how to print white letters and numbers on these sheets, since most of them are either white or color printers don’t print the color white. Use an outline around the white letter or number and then cut it off prior to cutting out the white decal?

That’s about the only way with an ink-jet printer… Although you could do them in very light grey that would appear white on a camouflage paint job…

Only other idea to try is introduce the model’s background colour around the white number/letter while on the computer. Then you can print out a square shape on the decal paper and apply it as such. You will have to paint over the decal edges to blend it in with the model’s paint colour as it will be impossible to get an exact match (although printing out a few tests and making adjustments to zero in on the exact shade will help). Of course if your background is metallic then you are really out of luck.
