Hey friends, I wish to print license plates for the model cars that I do. I’ve checked out several websites, one of which I use (http://www.acme.com/licensemaker) but am not fully content with because the images are bitmaps and the resolution is somewhat poor. The Platemaker used to provide quality, high-resolution plates but I believe he is no longer in business. Does anybody know if there is a program, or website where one can utilize vector images to make plates? Surely there must be something out there.

I have seen testors make a decal making program for your computer. Check Wal-Mart(the greatest model shop) or you can go to their website. I am not sure how good it is but if you try it, post your results.
I saw that kit at wal-mart to, it’s only like $5 so not like you’d be out much. I was going to give it a try for some custom decals myself if I can get the pics of the subjects.
A long time ago there was an article in the old SAE about using your 35mm camera to make road signs and license plates. It told how far away to be for 1/24, 1/25, and even 1/32 scale. It was a one sign, on one picture deal, but you got great shots of stuff you needed.
I saved the article but in my many moves, it was lost, I cannot find the article anywhere, and now that SAE is gone I doubt we will ever see it again. . .I wonder if Kalmbach will look through the archives and see if they can help and print it in the new Scale Auto??

While those custom plates on eBay are cool, it’d be nice to have that kind of knowledge. I have a couple SUVs I’m going to be building soon, & I’d like to have the exact license plates o my models. While $8 isn’t bad, it’s even easier to develop a roll of film I already have in the camera. [:D]
The proper distance with a 35mm camera is 16 feet. This will give you 1/24- 1/25 scale. Did a bunch of stuff (plates, magazines, model boxes, soda cases etc.) about 10 years ago and am still using it!
