I have the opportunity to hit several second hand stores such as Goodwill, St. Vincent DePaul etc on the way to work. It has kind of become a second (or maybe third or forth) hobby for me to see if I can add to my kit stash without being too hard on my pocket book. Sometimes I find some kits, sometimes not. You should try it sometime, you may find a great deal and you even help people out when you do. Today was a little better then average. I haven’t had much time to build lately but can still pick up a few odds & ends.
At one store I found this for .59 cents, it’s a Snap On 9/16” deep impact socket. Really has nothing to do with modeling but a good find never the less.
At the next store the next find was a Zhengdefu 1:48 scale F-111E. Don’t know much about this brand of kit. The box had been opened but the parts bags were still sealed. Had to fork out $1.99 for it.
At the next store I found a Pro Modeler P-40E Warhawk. Again the box had been opened but the parts are still sealed. Had to pay $3.99 for it.
At the same store I found 3 more Pro Modeler P-40E’s for $3.99 each in the same condition for a grand total of 4 Warhawks.
When I inspected the contents of the P-40’s one had this True Details P-40N Cockpit Detail set in it.
So all in all not a bad day, 5 kits, a detail set and a Snap On impact socket for less then $20. Now if I can just find some time to build.
You have been truly fortunate in your search. It would seem that Fresno is’nt as good for searching as your location. Our shops here are too busy selling material that the garbage pickup would’nt have.[(-D][(-D] Also yard sales have been sparse as search zones as well.
Darwin…one of my better days, I tend to find a lot of auto, a few aircraft, a couple sci-fi and no armor kits. Come to think of it I’ve also found two sealed dinosaurs kit.
Splash…I’ll probably average 2-3 kits a week from the thrift stores around here, about half are still factory sealed.
Duckman…finish a kit? Good one…Bawahahahaha!
MartinJK…your right nothing like a good socket, these thing sell for about $10-$15 each when new off the truck.
PakNicK-40…that’s what I said when I saw the first P-40 on the shelf, can’t print what I said when I saw the other 3.
Womble…I guess the Zhen kit is an Academy rip-off with bad decals. It does have engraved panel lines, which look like they would scale out to be about as wide as the Grand Canyon here in the States. I could always throw it on (censored) and double my money.[:D]
Good finds. That Zhangdefu kit isn’t bad really. I have a couple unfinished 1/48 kits from them. They’ll take some work. Ok, well they’ll take a LOT of work, but for 2 bucks, you just got yourself hours and hours of modelling fun.
RemcoGrob, you use an impact socket on an air powered impact wrench to loosen (or tighten) nuts and bolts. They are also good for use on a torque wrench for final tightening. They have thicker walls then a standard ratchet wrench type socket so they don’t break under high torque or when used with power tools.
About the only thing it could be use for in modeling is a nose weight for a very large aircraft.

Mauve would look good on a nice, long legged model, but this is another Asian company, I believe. I’ve never buiilt any of their kits, and I’m not sure I’ve even bought one. The memory is the second thing to go. Others will probably give you their opinions on quality.
actually look in the junk stores some times last year I found 2 model kits one sealed and the other open but every last piece was there. But yeah Yard sales are a good place to look too one time a few years ago I went to a yard sale and came home with 10 kits and 30 bottles of Testors Model Master and regular Enamel paint and some other miscellaneous model supplies for only 20 bucks. It would have cost me 90 for both the kits and the paint at a hobby shop. And a few of the finds were an Accurate Miniatures A-36 Apache Accurate Miniatures P-51A and a Revell 1/32 scale P-51B.
Also I forgot to meantion I went out Yard Sailing Saturday and came home with 8 Army Training manuals cost me $3.50 and a 28 year old Revell Cutty Sark model kit only missing 1 piece which could easily be scratch built (a Pin rail where the belaying pins go) and all I paid is $1. Sure wish I could find a yard sale that has 100 kits that I could buy for 20 bucks(for all of them).
BTW when I got home with my model sure it was missing 1 part but in the box was 4 bottles of Testors enamel paint all pretty much unused. Heck those 4 bottles are pretty much worth 6 bucks depending on how much they cost in a store and I got them for free.
