Pre-production F-117

Ok so i found this photo of the pre-production paint scheme (one of several i understand) on the F-117.

3 reasons for this post.

  1. Share the photo for interest.

  2. Does anyone know who makes decals and paint charts for this (in 48 scale)

  3. Does anyone know of any more photos of this paint scheme?

And without further adieu. The Photo.

From what i understand the tail section was slightly different to production models. Can anyone confirm this?

I can’t answer your question, but I like that paint scheme. It’s a nice diversion from the “production” color. I bet that pic inspires someone to build one like that. Thanks, Gary.

Yeah, me. lol Thats why im asking the questions.[:P]

I have never seen any other photos of that scheme personally. As far as decals, never have seen those either. But, as far as paint charts this image may help you out…

This wasn’t the F-117 but the aircraft which preceded it. Project Have Blue.

I have the Squadron walkaround on the F-117 and there was another camo pattern on the Have Blue that was designed to spoof sattelites. A black/Gray/Green combo. The Have Blue mockup also had a different tail configuration with the stabs going inboard instead of outboard. In all honestly the Have Blue is a much sleeker looking aircraft than the F-117 turned out to be.

The Have Blue aircraft were about 1/3 smaller than the production F-117.

Have Blue 47 ft long 22.5 ft. wingspan

F-117 65 ft long 43 ft wingspan

The picture of the camo bird is obviously a production F-117 by the size and tail planes.

Here’s the Have Blue schemes:

I’ve been thinking of doing one of the Have Blue camo schemes on my Testors F-19

Thanks guys.

Its actually a YF-117 not a have blue. the have blue had inward slanting tail planes not outward.

I quite like that overall blue scheme. But painting it USAAF camouflage would look cool.

While the first of the two “Have Blue” aircraft (BLUE -1) did temporarily sport a camo scheme, the photo above is indeed of the first full-scale development (FSD) F-117, #780, according to “F-117 Nighthawk Stealth Fighter Photo Scrapbook” by Mailes and Landis.

Hey dipaoj, i appreciate your input, but necroposting is usually frowned apon round here.

Don’t sweat it too much, Scorpio. Any positive contribution to any conversation is good and should be encouraged rather than discouraged.
