Polikarpov 1-16 type 5 cockpit color?

Alrighty, for all you Russian aviation experts, what color would the cockpit of an I-16 (type 5) be? I’ve got natural metal, light blue, or light gray. This is for my Zveno build, and it would be nice to be accurate in this respect. Thanks.

From what I’ve seen and heard (not necessarily gospel though) is light grey is correct. I used light grey on my I-16 type 24 and the resident Soviet expert in my club noted that it looked right. Whatever thats worth [:P]

Good ol Ellia…!! Yo Justen, dont ya have any pix of your pit? Truly love that build of yers…

Hey Mike,

For a Type 5, there are two acceptable options: unpainted or AII Undersurface Blue.

Hey Mike

I really can’t seem to get a good pic in the cockpit of mine since I closed it up. I’ve tried and there’s just no room…lol I spent a good amount of time on the instrument panel and its one of my best. Now, you can’t even tell that there’s one in there!!!

As far as the color, I’ve heard of folks using blue and BMF as well and there is evidence supporting all. In my opinion, you’re safe using any of them unless you have a specific picture of you’re a/c.

Here’s a question for you, Lucien. Which would you prefer?

I think I’ll probably go with the NMF, for a few reasons.

First, because these are going to be hung off my TB-3 for my Zveno project, they are supposed to be beat-up, surplus aircraft. For this reason, the cockpit, if it had been painted, “could” be so beat up as to have lost nearly all its paint.

Second, seeing as how all the parts in the kit have gotten a shot of silver ANYWAY, I might as well just stick with it. [:D]
