PM Models Horten 229

Has anyone built this kit?

If so is it any good?

Karl

I’ve never built one of PM’s kits, but reviews I have seen of their other aircraft don’t look promising. They all noted little/soft/inaccurate detail and shape problems. There was a pic of their Ho 229 in FSM’s “Modeling the Second World War,” released a few years ago. I wasn’t very impressed.

I did find a review of a 1/72 Ho 229 produced by Revell AG. It looks pretty good, though its probably more expensive than the PM kit.

I’ve built the 1/48 DML kit, and I liked it. It, like all of their kits, takes patience to build, but the detail is great (both engines, tubular structure, full cannons, etc.)

Hope this helps, Karl !

Thank’s Pix.

Not sure I want to go the 1/48 route for reasons of cost and space.

The Dragon kit is the best part of $60 here in the UK!!!

I’ll keep an eye out for revell’s effort in 1/72.

I’m hoping that isn’t another rebox though!

Karl

hi,
forget it, i built it when it first came out, use it for target practice, cos that’s all it’s good for, go for the Revell one.

Thanks jon.

So that’s a no then?

I’ll keep a look out for the Revell kit, especially now I know that Eduard do a nice PE set to go with it.

As a rule, PM kits are crude and sparsely detailed, but in their home country, Turkey, they have a practical monopoly outside of Istanbul. Generally, if someone else makes a model of the same aircraft, go for that one instead.

Beware that PM mouldings are sometimes re-boxed under other manufacturers’ labels, especially Revell and Matchbox. If you fnd a kit of an aircraft by either of these, and it is also made by PM, think very carefully before buying it.

That said, the Revell 1/72 Horten 229 is part of theri growing ‘Luft’ 46’ series, and excellent.

Chris thanks for that.

I saw the Revell kit a few months back at my LHS, but didn’t pick it up due to the number of unbuilt kits I already have…

I;ve just completed the Ar555 in the same series, and that is a wonderful kit. Might do the Me P1099 next, if I can’t find the Horten.

I’ve got one under construction now - Reminds me of an early Airfix kit. Basic outline seems to be ok - very soft plastic plastic - lots of rescribing - very little cockpit details (and no reference pics of same!). Think it can be turned into a pretty fair model - just going to take some serious work. I haven’t seen the Revell kit so can’t tell you if it’s a repackage of the PM kit or an origional. If its an origional, would reccomend getting it.

Here’s a B&W pic of the 229’s instrument panel.

And here’s a page of a built 1/48 DML kit.
