Pin vise

I need to get a pin vise. Which would be the best one to get for drilling out guns and exhausts on 1/48 and 1/72 aircraft? Also which number drill bit will I need? If you could please provide a link as to where i can get both. thanks.

I got one from Hobby Lobby, can’t remember the brand name, but they have a whole section of knives, pliers and such. It comes with about 8 or so different sized drill bits that are stored inside the pin vise. You just unscrew the back of it to get to them.

check out Micro Mark, the small tool specialist that has a gazillion unique items for the modeler. www.micromark.com
set of 4 sizes of pin vises = #81497 for $8.65
set of #61 thru #80 very small drill bits in a case = #60362 for $12.50
Your first order will get you on their mailing list and includes a catalog
These drill bits and pin vises are one of my most used tools in modeling.

Thanks. which is the drill bit size that is required for 1/72 scale? i was thinking of this http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=81651

But if i need a smaller drill bit size for 1/72 than what it comes with i’ll get a different one.

Sounds like you want some really small bits so just be advised that the larger the # of the drill bit the smaller it is . For example # 80 drill bit is very small and fragile (about the width of a hair)at .0135 of an inch and # 61 is much larger (about 3x a #80 bit )at .039 of an inch .

yeah i need them pretty small for the work i do.

Think it would be best to get the #61 through #80 set, more options for size (I don’t know what size you need for 1/72 mg’s). Had my set for years and end up used most of them at one time or another

I agree with yardbird78 … you just can’t go wrong with http://www.micromark.com/. I’ve always had good luck with them. [swg]

so are you saying that you need some kind of dremal tool?

I got one years ago and find it hard to live without it and dremel came out with a drill bit index that has the smallest drill bit to the largest all in a round container.

something else i use mine for is scribing, I got a needle for my wifes sewing machine, and cut off the square end. Then I just chuck it up in my pinvise and scribe my heart out. Its so sharp, you really have to watch the pressure though.

You can also get a pin vise and bits in any store that carries welding supplies.
They are sold as “Tip cleaning” kits and will usually be cheaper than a hobbyist’s
pin vise although they are exactly the same thing.
