Remember how we as armor modelers used to joke about getting a 35th scale model of a Leopold! I’ve hard lately that the ship builders are joking about getting a 72nd scale Nimitz! [:0]
Wow!, oh, so many feedbacks!. I’d like to thank everybody for all their kind compliments on my Leopold. My modeler would be glad to know all about this, and will try his best to maintain the quality of modelling.
Larry_Dunn, the 1/35 Leopold with rail and embankment is only 116 cm long. But a 1/72
Nimitz will be some 5 meters long! (my 1/350 Enterprise is already 1.005 m, you multiply that by 5). I don’t think any manufacturer will produce a model that big. You’ll need a museum to keep it!.
If you’d like to see 1/72 ships galore, take a trip (if you get a chance to visit Washington, DC) to the Smithsonian. They used to have a huge display of Naval Aviation along with some serious scratch built carriers with kit models on deck in aout every point of activity possible on a carrier. I’d go back just to see the models on display. Does anyone know if they’re still on display?
And by the way Model Maniac, the models look absolutely fantastic! I have been marveling at the work on your web site. I keep trying to figure out just how many people are building all those models and how did they get that good at it? Maybe I need to come to Tailand and become a student of modeling!
You mean the big carrier model at national air and space? Yeah, it’s still there. It’s showing its age – the jaw-dropping scratchbuilt stuff you see in FSM blows it away. Actually, I think there’re more models on display at the Intrepid than at National Air and Space. I was a little disappinted after all the hype about what a wonderland NAS is. Lots of planes on display for civilian aviation between the wars, which I’m not particularly interested in. It was cool to see a Spitfire and a 109 though. I’d never seen either in the flesh before. Glamorous Glynnis was interesting too.
I’ve heard about 1/72 carriers before and I understand that they were all scratch-built.
No model manufacturer will ever produce a model that big anyway. Too bad I’m not in the USA, there’s no way I can take a look at those gigantic models.
Pathfinder, thank you very much for your kind compliments on my models. I am quite
sure that Art Instructor is Thailand’s best armor modeler, and may be the world’s most prolific armor & diorama modeler too. You can count the number of dioramas and armored vehicles that he’s been building for me for the past 3-4 years. There are hundreds of them!. If you have a chance to come to Thailand, feel free to drop by my house and see the real things. Art Instructor will be here to greet you too.
