Attached are photos of my Apogee Components 1/70 scale Apollo Saturn 1B, finished last weekend. It carries the color scheme and markings of the Apollo 7 mission (October 1968). It was a really great kit and a lot of fun to build. It is a flying model rocket although I built mine as a static display. Being a plastic model builder, this project was a break from my normal routine. The parts consisted of paper tubes, paper wraps, vac-form wraps and laminated paper disks. There were also a handful of resin and styrene plastic parts. I spent 2-1/2 months working on it, using about 160 hours. There were no written instructions, but instead I got 2 CDs contain a lot of short “how to” videos and color line drawings. The videos were very detailed and entertaining. The model is really big (over 38” tall) with a lot of impressive details. I have been looking for a large, well detailed, accurate Apollo Saturn 1B for a long time and I finally got it. I hope you enjoy the photos.
Great job and nice creative “outside the box” thinking to get the model you want. Brings back memories of when I was a kid in the '60s glued to the TV for each launch. Thanks for sharing!
Everyone, thanks for the compliments. They are appreciated.
Padakr-The decals used are all from the kit. The only deviation made was to the red “UNITED STATES” booster decals that were on a white rectangle background. The white film was very thin and the black paint on the boosters showed through. To solve this I ordered a second set of decals and stacked them on top of each other to keep the background really white. I normally don’t do this but it was the only soultion I could think of.
As a side note the best part of the kit was the sytrene plastic escape rocket/capsule cover parts. They are the best I have ever seen (plastic model or flying rocket). The low point of the kit were the resin parts, especially the fins. They required alot clean up and repair.
