Below are photos of Monogram’s 1/48 scale Heinkel HE-111 H4 WWII German medium bomber. The model has the color scheme and markings of an aircraft assigned to KG53 (Legion Condor). It participated in the September 15, 1940 raid over (considered “Battle of Britain Day”), was damaged and forced to crash land with two wounded crew members.
I built this model in 1999. Listed below are the modifications/additions that were made:
Ø Photo-etched seatbelts/harnesses/gun ring sights-
Ø Scratch built landing light to front wing-
Ø Scratch built floor sections-
Ø Small diameter wire for “Lorenz” lower fuselage antennas-
Ø Fishing line was used for the rigging details-
This is one of my favorite WWII planes and the Monogram model is a real jewel. It required some extra work to get the major parts to fit up properly, but I believe it is on the same level of a Hasegawa or Tamiya kit. I hope you enjoy the photos.
Fantastic build Phillip! [t$t] You did a great job on her paint and didn’t goober it up w/too much after mkt. So that is a Revellogram? I wish my LHS stocked that one but she will be ordering today.
Fantastic build. So crisp and sharp…looks like you nailed the masking job both on the canopy and the paint scheme. Thank you for posting those pictures.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t those tactical operational markings use to designate the aircraft’s unit? They would/could be changed according to mission requirements. [:^)]
Thanks for the compliments. They are appreciated. Concerning the three white rectangles on the upper right wing there are conflicting theories. I’ve read they may represent “Gruppe III of a Geschwader”, although most Luftwaffe experts do not agree. Per Ray Riimell, the most convincing explanation is these were added to certain planes as a visual aid for easier formation assembly. This battle was the first attempt at really large daylight formations by ANY airforce. These marking were carried on the wings or rudder. I do know the plane I modeled (Wkr. Nr. 3340) had them so they were added. I am not much of a Luftwaffe guy, but there are probably several on this forum who have a relevant opinion.
Reasoned-Congratulations on getting your HE-111. It is a really good kit. The ony item (I can remember) to watch out for is matching up the front fuslage with the one piece nose canopy. I had to use some internal bracing in the fuselage to get a near perfect match. The Monogram kit includes markings for a Battle of Britain plane from KG55 (Griffin Squardon) and one from the Italian Theater (KOG 26-Lion Squadron). I did not use the kit decals on my model. I am pretty sure what I used came from an old Super Scale set, but I do not know which one.
Concerning the canopy masking, I know a used EZ Vinyl Masks (from Canada). These are very easy to use make even complicated green houses easy to handle. Today I use Eduard’s canopy masks on all the aircraft I build.
