Photoetch for the Revell Type VII-interested? (PICTURE added)

One of the senior members of the SubCommittee makes photoetch decks for 1/32nd, 1/40th, and 1/48th scale Type VII U-Boats. He is contemplating making the decks for the Revell 1/72, and asked me to post this note and see what interest would be had by the modeling community for such an item. (My understanding was that WEM was going to do a deck, but now may not… )

Jeff is a detail fanatic- his decks are very precise and accurate. (He’s a CAD jockey…) He’ll do them in brass or stainless as well.

Please post back here and give some feedback. Pricing and options are going to be dependent on the interest generated.

thanks to all,
Sam

[X-)]Kind of hard to tell without seeing sample.

[%-)]I can’t quite imagine the horror of having to cut away the existing deck and attempting to scratch-build something that would accurately show through the various openings.

[sigh]I’s really rather have some photo=etch to upgrade and accurize the deck guns, add some radar devices appropriate to the period, maybe a snorkel device, and accessories to add the Focke-Achgellis manned kite (cable reel, launch platform, etc.)

“Should we prosper it shall be as is our custom…by Miracle!”

Jeff’s already talked about a deck option that would include a snorkel well.

I’ll ask him for some images of his current decks to post here…they’ll be a larger scale though.

A photo etched deck would be great! What does your friend estimate the cost to be to do something that big?
Dave

Eleventy-Two dollars and 36 cents…

Jeff

PS: It’s not me, I photoetched my own deck for my Amati U-boat. That was enough for me.

Thanks Jeff H- but I think they’ll be a little more expensive than that!! [:D]

Here’s a picture of the Robbe 1/40 deck that Jeff produces:

The person that produces them is Jeff LaRue…he’s the VP of the SubCommittee, and also the editor of the SubCommittee’s magazine.

This deck was manufactured to fit the Robbe 1/40 scale R/C model.so it’s a bit of a “generic” deck.

He also produces strainers and vents for 1/96 scale nukes like Sturgeons and LA class subs, and a set of deck grates and vents for a 1/48 scale Type XXI U-Boat.

Feel free to post any more questions…I will try to get you whatever answers I can…I just know that when I build my Revell, I’d like to have this option available from someone!

Hey Sam,

Eleventy two dollars is a lot of money (according to my 5 year old)

Jeff H.

Jeff’s given me a ballpark estimate on price for decks for this model- roughly $40, with some minimum number the Jeff would need to order from his supplier. I believe that’s a sheet that’s 12" X 24".
