Does anyone know of a source of photo etched detail sets for autos. It has been many years since I bought a set . I bought a set for Monograms 1967 Corvette and it was excellent. Unfortunately I discarded the packageing and no longer know who manufactured it.
I’m looking for a set for AMT/ERTLs new 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500. It would be great to be able to replace the S H E L B Y letters, and the Cobra emblems with PE chromed parts.

You could try http://www.modelcargarage.com/mcg_main.cfm and see if anything in their range will suite your needs. Unfortunatly they don’t have a '68-specific set for you but maybe the '67 or '69 Mustang sets will help you a bit on the way. One thing is for sure, they have very nice p/e-sets. I have the one for the 1960 Starliner and it kind of sweept my feets away, haven’t had the guts to start the build yet [:o)] Not only because of the p/e but also as I have a friend collecting the real thing, he has about 15 of them with 4 or 5 in traffic. It’s not a very common car here in Sweden and he is the #1 guru if you wan’t to know anything about 1960 full size Ford’s. Getting away from subject now, can’t help myself [:D]

Thank you. How in the world did 15 1960 Ford Starliners get to Sweeden? I know that era of Fords very well. My first driving lesson was in a 1959 Ford Sunliner. My first car was a 1954 Ford. At age 13 I started helping a neighbor do a “ground-up” restoration of a 1935 Ford 5 window, and a 1936 Ford Coupe. Both had flat head V-8s. You might say I grew up in Fords.
In my opinion the 1960 has fantastic lines, especially the two door hardtop. And now I am digressing, but you touched on some fond (Ford) memories.
As for your PE set and their application, give it a try. The PE parts can shoot away from the spru when you go to cut them away. So, I like to apply a piece of tape accross the parts. Cut close, but a little away fron the piece. You can file off the small piece of “sprue” once the piece is safely removed.
I clamp the pieces between two small pieces of wood with the burr that I want to file off exposed. The wood keeps the piece from getting bent. I apply the PE part to the finished body with clear paint. Use the same paint that you clear the body with. You have to be careful, but a little bit of clear sprayed over the finished piece will usually hide any imperfections. It takes practice and there is only one way to get that! Do it.
