Welcome to the HH-60G Pavehawk Replacement / CSAR-X Group Build.
The clock is officially ticking! But not to worry, the end date will give ample time for participation by all.
[Rules:
The topics or entries are not limited to the airframes currently competing in the actual CSAR-X competition, rather any possible airframe that would/could be be a replacement. Forget about costs, we’re taking about anything you could dream up. Pave Phrog, H-53, Helix, Hip, V-22 (arrrgg), Super Frelon, whatever. Just make sure it’s outfitted and optimized for SAR and CSAR. Oh, and thy name shall begin with Pave…
Time will be 23 April 2006 through 23 February 2007. This is a long time, but we’ve got a lot of rotorheads on deployment and we want to ensure they’re provided ample time.
Paint schemes are what ever you want.
Markings must be USAF, Air National Guard, or USAF Reserves. You could include the manufacturers markings or logos if you’d like.
AM, PE and resin all allowed. Any detailing you’d like.
Any scale. (except 1/1)[:)]
That about does it. The main thing is to have fun.
Here’s the original post over at the Helicopter forum where we discussed this idea:
salbando - 1/72 scale HH-71 Pave Owl & 1/72 (maybe 1/48) scale HH-47G Pave Hook (when I can find them), both as AKANG birds (hence the Pave Owl, and maybe special paint schemes)
I’m in. HH-46K Pave Phrog in 1/48. But…Air Force markings??? Well, if those are the rules, I guess I can live with them. Have to come up with a good paint scheme now.
Put me down for the following: 1:72 HH-47G Pave Hook and a 1:72 HH-71
Schemes and unit markings unknown at this time. I’ll need to do some profiles of these two so I can determine what they’ll look like in certain colors.
All right, I screwed up. The end date is 23 Feb 2007 (not 2006). But I’m sure you all figured that one out already. And just because it started a couple days ago doesn’t mean ya gotta start right now. That’s why I made the VUl period so long.
BTW, I plan on doing several birds, but here’s what I know for sure…An Alaska ANG HH-47, and AK ANG HH-71, and…I haven’t decided yet.
Oh and the badge will be the CSAR-X pic in the original post, with a few modifications done by Trigger (hopefully).
Just for some hints or suggestions…I’d say that whatever one chooses to build, it might have a hoist, extra bags-o-gas (either internally or externally), defensive weapons, Mega Comm (read antennas), maybe an inflight refueling boom, stokes kits, MA-1 kits, penetrator, ECM, IR suppression, etc.
Yep, mine will end up being a veritable “self licking ice cream cone” once I get all the goodies in and on it…Anyone know of a source for 1/48 stokes litters? I think Cobra Co’s going to be getting some of my money for sure on this build.
This afternoon I’m going to track down Italeri’s Echo-Hook to get some parts.
( I’ll also use this 1/72 Chinook to get some measurements to convert Trump’s Delta-Hook into the SOAR version … but that’s another story)
Nice start, Avus. I’ll just come out and say it; I’m jealous! You’ve already gotten to play and I’m soaking up the desert heat here for a little while longer. No matter, I’ll get my chance.
Keep the updates coming in. That cockpit is beautiful. Can’t wait to see more.
Thanks LJ, but there’s not much to it, only assembled parts. I’m working on it as long as I can before I move to my new place.
This WE I got Italeri’s Loach (not the Echo-Hook as I hoped) and started modifying the Minigun, pics in the next days.
BTW a question: this is supposed to be a russian helo acquired by the USAF, should I paint the cockpit in black like US helos or in that strange Blue the russians use?
Same with the Chaff/Flare dispensers: US or Russian?
Black. I doubt that blue is compatible with night vision devices. And as for the Chaff/Flare dispensers - my [2c] - U.S. and here’s why: logistics. It will be easier and cheaper for the services to use a common bucket than to have two different buckets in the system, especially on deployments. But this is a next-gen CSAR platform so who’s to say there won’t be a new bucket in the pipeline?
Avus, I’d be happy with just getting to work on some sub-assemblies right now.
I’d have to agree with Trigger. Black for the interior, and US type counter measures dispensers. Is there an AM source specifically for chaff/flares and plume detectors?
I don’t work in 1/72…makes my eyes burn and my fumbling fingers itch. I’ve been passing the time looking through Cobra’s listings and trying to figure out which set(s) will give me the odds and ends that I need for this project. But scratch-building is always a good option, too.
Thanks Trigger and LJ. That’s what I thought, too, just wanted a second opinion.
As far as I know there is no “AM source specifically for chaff/flares and plume detectors”, sadly. But as Trigger said in 1/72 they are easily scratch built.
My “biggest” problem is finding resources for the cabin interior, but thanks to intruder_bass I’m in contact with a person who could help me out.
Second one looks great, but I’m afraid people won’t understand it.
… anyhow my vote goes to the second one!
As far as my progress goes: I have started painting the cockpit, made a resin copy of the door and improved the minigun.
Still waiting for the interior shots …
As they are right now I’m gonna have to vote for the first one. Now, I might reconsider if the second one was panned back a little more to show that it’s a Pavehawk tail.
Thanks Grant fo making these!
Oh yeah, make the front office black for NVG compatibility. And add the AN/APR-39V2 system.
