Pastel dust as a wash?

You all probably know this by now, but I just, for the first time used Pastel dust as a wash, with distilled water. WOW, how easy and how effective and easy clean up as opposed to like the normal way, with enamels, etc.

Anyone else find this out to be true as well? Id like to know.

Plus, all the different colors you have to choose from.

I personally havent tried it yet but I did read the article Im thinking of using it on the Tamiya 1/48 Skyraider Im building, what was the ratio that you used if you dont mind me asking?
Cheers

I just ordered a set of pastels from Micro Mark. I am anxious to try them for the first time. Let’s see how much of a mess I can make.

That’s what I do. I always considered it “cheating” though since I never really heard of anyone else doing it. I feel much less guilty now. Thanks.

I use a darker pastel to exsentuate panel lines and then a lighter one in the midle of the panels on top of the a/c to appear sun bleached.

What is your combination of color to distilled water?
Is it sprayed on or put on with a brush?

Which one?

can you seal it though? I hear pastels “blow away” when you try to put a top coat on it. If not, it sure would be faster than washes!!

If you mix the pastels with a wet medium (e.g. distilled water) it holds better - allowing you to seal it.

For color - never use straight black (IMO), I always use a mix of black and earth tones over gloss for panel lines and a mix of lighter earth tones (sort of a beige) for bleaching and dusting panels in a dry application (no d.water) over dull, I’ll also add gun powder streaks exhaust streaks etc. (dry app) at this point, then gloss over that if the subject warrants it, although you may want to dull down the exaust streaks, etc.[2c]

I appreciate these instructions ! I really do.
