For those of you who use pastel chalks for weathering.
Can you give some names of manufacturers / tradenames so I know specifically what to look for. I’ve heard people mention using “the chalk type” - not “the oil based kind”.

There’s so many different manufacturers of chalks that you may get 1500 answers here. The important thing is that you do get chalks not the oil based pastels … they’re just glorified crayons and will cause grief.
If you have a Michael’s near you, they have a great selection. If not, any major arts & crafts store.
Pastel chalks are, well, just like ordinary blackboard chalks to the touch. They are dry and hard, but will mark your fingers easily.
Oil pastels feel greasy to the touch, like kid’s colouring crayons.
If you go to an art store, it will be obvious when you handle the pastels whether they are chalk or oil. Art stores here in the UK normally carry both types, displayed separately.

Recently got back into modeling with all the common questions about weathering. My journey took me to Hobby Lobby where I found all my weathering needs. Pastels, oils, water colors also for washes and cheap too.
Just picked up two sets of pastels. They sell small sets of different color groups. Bought the earth colors and the greys. I think it was about $5.00 a set. Much cheaper than what my hobby shop wanted. Don’t feel too bad for my hobby shop, they get enough $$$$$ out of me for RC stuff. Hope this helps ya.
One set that is very much suited to our uses is the “Earth Tones” set made by Weber Costello. This set contains 12 colors ranging from light yellow, dark yellows, buff, tan, rusts, light browns, dark browns and black.
