I was just reading the other posting about identifying that container ship and saw that tankerbuilder mentioned building paper ones. I’ve always thought about building a paper model ship. Was just wondering where is the best place to go online to purchase one. I went to PMI, and they really didn’t have much there. Maybe tankerbuilder will read this and help out.

I did a google search one day on paper models and was flooded with vendor hits. I know Fiddler’s Green does a lot of airplanes- don’t know about how many ships they have.
I googled it and hit with a ton of vendors as well. The only problem is that it seems that they all have a tremendous amount listed, but when you look they only have a few things in stock. Maybe it’s a very limited production thing

Go to digitalnavy.com and hit their downloads section. There are some great free ship models that you can print out and try, ranging from fairly simple to fairly complex.
You can also use them as patterns for scratchbuilding, if desired.

Try Marcle Models, they are in the U.K. and will ship to the U.S.I did a 1-200 Arizona. Be prepared to work. Very enjoyable though. No painting just cut and glue and cut and glue and cut and glue. Zealot has a build log in which a guy had the same ship blown up to 1-100. very cool.

some modellers, particularly the Eastern Europeans seem capable of building some truly outstanding models from paper. I tried it once an couldn’t get along with the skills required at all- but some friends have tried them and loved the whole experience! The kits are quite inexpensive, but I’d recommend trying a free download from one of either steelnavy.com or papershipwright.co.uk. Both are representative of the modern generation of digitally designed kits and are probably a lot more buildable than some free downloads you come across!
Some superb free US civil war vessels can be downloaded too. Sadly the designer, who appears to have been determined to publish as many kits as possible without any charge recently passed away. The models appear to still be available to download. http://www.myspace.com/mmpapermodels

Finally, although they are European based, I foun moduni.com had a good selection of paper models in stock, and I have receive items from them very quickly overseas to the UK.

I’ve built quite a few paper ship models. I purchased most of them on E-bay. There’s almost always a few up for sale there. Paper Models International used to be a good source in the US but they’re now out of business.

As to manufacturers, JSC has a huge line of 1/400 paper ships and quite a few 1/250 as well. Wilhelmshaven is a German company that has a nice line of 1/250 ships. Fly Model, Answer, and Halinski also have some very nice kits.
