Panzer IV Ausf. H and Ausf. J Late

Heres’ a few pics of some Panzer IV’s I finished for Dupes 1000 Roadwheels Group Build. Two Tamiya Ausf. H’s and Dragon’s old Ausf.J Late. The Tamiya kits are built out of the box while for the Dragon kit I used Modelkasten tracks (first time, very nice) and Eduard PE for the Thoma schurzen.

Man-O-Man what a trio of fire power.[Y][H]

Excellent Tony Lee

Very nice trio of IVs! Nice work on the older kits, you’ve done them proud.

Well done. [Y] Did you build these production line style or one at a time?

Cheers

Dave

Boy I tell you what, I can see them rolling in formation. Way to go!!![:D[

Bushi

NICE!

Love the Thoma Schurzen.

You post came just when I am ready to paint my IV ausf G by Dragon. Although I’m not sure whether to paint it grey or yellow. Your built will ba a good reference for mine. Thanks for showing your great looking built. Just to ask, were they still painted grey during the Kursk batlle?

Thanks guys for taking the time to chime in. No production line here (LOL), I just worked on one or the other while waiting for glue or paint to dry on the other. The Dragon kit took the longest, because fo the extra goodies and needed more attention and clean up compared to the Tamiya kits. And Constructor, I think you could do either and be safe.

Beauties all three, one of my favourite vehicles and excellently done, the ambush camo is really striking i love it great work all round, the tamiya kits really stand up well to the dragon one with the extra,s i must say, very well done.

Ron.

No they should be yellow with green I think. No grey. Grey was discontinued in Feb. 1943.

Please tell me of your experience with the modelKasten tracks. Which set did you use. I bought a set to go on a DML Nashorn, when I opened the box and saw all that was required I said “Holy crap Batman” and just closed it back up. Any advice would be appreciated.

Mike

Mike,

I typically will use MK sets on most of my builds and while they can seem a little bit daunting at first, they really aren’t that difficult to assemble. It is a repetitive task that can seem tedious, no doubt there, but you get the benefit in the end with the tracks being fully workable. Depending on the type of track (I don’t recommend MKs for “live” track systems like those on Shermans for example), it should take you about 2-3 hours of effort to assemble each track run. This time estimate includes removing each link from the sprue, cleaning up the attachment points, and the assembly of the links together. Your results may vary but I typically will break up the monotony by working on them in stages and usually in front of the TV vs. trying to do it all in one-shot. HTH!

Nice job on all three, but I really like the J! The ambush camo, and the mesh schurzen look very good!

Nate

They all look terrific but ditton on the mesh schuzen.

I know alot of people prefer tigers but I’ve always thought the IV was one of the cooler looking German tanks.

I’ve always thought the IV had a look all it’s own. I’m a huge Panther & Tiger fan, but as time has gone on, I myself have really grown to like the Pz. III’s and 38 (t) chassis. My first armor was a Monogram Pz IV. After building all of the Monogram family, except the Brummbar, I burnt out on the 32 wheels. [blkeye]

Gamera, I take it you are a fan of Japanese monster movies also? I loved them as a kid and Gamera was one of the cooler ones. I don’t think he ever lost a battle.

The Tiger, Panther, and Royal Tiger are nice looking tanks with a sorta sleek look to them (ok maybe less so with the Tiger I). The more boxy ‘complicated’ look to the III and IV to me give them ‘character’ or at least make them interesting to me. And yeah, I generally paint the rubber tires on the roadwheels so after ten or so I’m ready to take a break.

Gamera- well he’s a giant, radioactive, fire-breathing, flying turtle- what’s there not to love? I honestly wonder sometimes what sort of recreational drugs were going around the Japanese movie industry when they came up with the Gamera films.

The old '60s films were a perfect case of so bad they’re good. Oddly though the '00s trilogy of the reinvinted Gamera are in my humble opinion the best Japanese giant monster films ever done. ‘Gamera: Guardian of the Universe’, ‘Attack of Legion’, and ‘Revenge of Iris’ are actually better than any Godzilla film at least in my opinion.

Finally I guess the big reason I like the old turtle is that Godzilla shows up like John Wayne and kicks #@#. Gamera seems more like Bruce Willis in ‘Die Hard’. He gets the snot beat out of him in every movie but somehow manages to rally in the end and come out on top. You have to feel sorry for the poor guy.
