I’m finishing up on Dragon’s Panzer III Model J #6543 and I’ve come to a crossroads as to how to paint it. The instructions call for Dark Yellow over the Panzer Grey but the box art on the side of the box has the tank as overall Panzer Grey.
My question is were Panzers in Barbarossa painted in the overspray type like the DAK? This maybe too general a question but I thought I’d ask so someone more knowledgeable could steer me in the right direction.
i would think just panzer gray but you coulf probably load up with 5 gal cans and ectra spare tracks
It would be more plausible to assume that since this was early on in the war when supplies were more abundant. I have plenty of Panzer Dark Grey so I think I’ll just use that. I’ve tried finding some reference pics of the vehicle in the guide but to no avail.

At the opening of Babarossa, it would be safe to have everything in panzer Gray. Later as losses mounted and equipment meant for Africa was diverted to Russia as attrition replacements, tropical colors could be found there. Not Dark Yellow in 1941, but Gelbbraun RAL 8000 Graugrun RAL 7008 in 1941 could be found in Russia.

Thanks for the help. I’m thinking this is where artistic interpretation is gonna come into play. I think the dark grey with dark yellow overspray will do nicely. 
Dark Yellow was still a couple of years away during Babarossa. That color most likely is Gelbbraun RAL 8000. One of the colors used in Africa.

Depending on how and how much you weather it, the actual correct shade won’t matter that much.
Heres’s what I have so far… This is Vallejo Model Air Panzer Dark Grey and VMA Dark Yellow.

I hadn’t in that pic. I had just painted and posted before I left for work. Last night I gave it a pin wash Testors dark brown "Rubber’ and drybrushed it a lightened Panzer Grey so the details really pop now Decals are on, I just gotta finish up ‘dirtying up’ the running gear and I painted all the tools and wooden parts on it as well.
That looks great—there was a period in Russia where Dark Grey and Dark Yellow were overlapped, and used for camo. There’s a few Tigers in that scheme as well.
Very nice representation of the camo pattern, give it the perfect ‘dappled’ look. [B]

You sure that photo is from 1941?
It’s not. The misleading part may be the original thread title referencing ‘Barbarossa’. The pic that DM provided is from mid-late 1942 given the model of Pz III it shows. [;)]
